PlayStation Patent May Reveal Major New Feature Coming With PS6

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but get excited about this latest PlayStation patent! The idea of a ‘Game Play Rewind With User Triggered Bookmarks’ feature sounds like a game-changer (pun intended).

Recently, a PlayStation patent has given us a glimpse of what might be an exciting new feature coming with the anticipated PS6. A corporation like PlayStation consistently explores innovative ideas and invests heavily in research and development. This ongoing exploration often results in numerous PlayStation-related patents becoming publicly available online.

This newly introduced concept is referred to as “Rewind Gameplay with User-Triggered Markers,” which essentially means a rewind function that uses the DualSense controller. The patent application was filed in 2023 and just got published on October 31 of the current year.

During my gaming experience, if I press the universal button on my controller while playing a live game, the visuals of the game unfold in a continuous sequence. At the exact moment I press that button, the current image frame is shown to me.

The patent continues: “The method including receiving selection of a rewind mode from features presented in a user interface displayed simultaneous with the live game play in response to the actuation of the universal button. The method including accessing from storage a subset of captured image frames generated for the game play. The method including entering the rewind mode by automatically switching from displaying the live game play to displaying the subset of captured image frames in reverse beginning from the current image frame. The method including responding to rewind controller inputs for controlling the displaying of the subset of captured image frames in rewind mode.”

It’s not entirely obvious what this patent pertains to, but some interpretations suggest it could offer a ‘rewind’ function for players to go back in time within their saved games by pressing a designated button on the controller. This feature is similar to what emulator users might be familiar with. If accurate, this could potentially be a standout feature for the PS6.

However, others have pointed out this is likely for nothing more than rewinding previous gameplay to view and view only. This would be a major addition to the functionality of the console, but not quite as consequential.

It’s important to mention that the ideas presented in these patents might manifest earlier with the PS5 and potentially a future model, the PS5 Pro. However, it often takes a significant amount of time for patented ideas to become consumer products. Therefore, if this patent does result in something, we anticipate it may be associated with the PS6 rather than the PS5. Keep in mind that not every PlayStation patent leads to a real product – many have been filed over the years without ever coming to fruition.

Currently, Sony (the company behind PlayStation) hasn’t responded to the recent patent-related speculations. Historically, they don’t comment on patents or the rumors that often come with them. So, for now, it seems unlikely that they will break this pattern, but should anything change, we’ll make sure to update our story accordingly.
