Ridley Scott’s Alien Movie Could Pay Off a Years-Long Tease After All

As a seasoned moviegoer with over five decades of cinematic journey under my belt, I’ve seen directors come and go, but Ridley Scott remains a constant force that leaves an indelible mark on the silver screen. His return to the Alien universe has been a rollercoaster ride filled with both triumphs and tribulations, much like the xenomorph itself.

Film director Ridley Scott frequently revisits his iconic productions even after long absences from their respective franchises, like his comeback to the ‘Alien’ series with the prequel film ‘Prometheus’ following over three decades. This year, the spin-off ‘Alien: Covenant’ reignited fan interest in the concept, leading to reports that Scott is planning a new installment, as he hinted during an interview about the promising narrative possibilities of the ending in ‘Alien: Covenant’, potentially wrapping up his prequel plan and setting the stage for the original ‘Alien’ events within a trilogy.

Scott expressed that ‘Covenant’ is the ideal choice for a sequel since it ends with the girl still in the cryo pod and Michael Fassbender’s android, David, possessing alien eggs and over 2,000 colonists nearby. This setup makes for an excellent starting point,” Scott revealed to The Hollywood Reporter.

Back in 2011, when Scott unveiled “Prometheus” to us fans, there was buzz that it would spark a trilogy, delving deeper into the themes introduced and ultimately leading up to the events of “Alien.” However, it wasn’t until 2017, with the release of “Covenant,” that we got the next installment. While these films certainly had their dedicated followers, they didn’t quite hit the mark in terms of studio and filmmaker expectations. Regrettably, it seemed like the prequel storyline was left hanging, stagnant for what felt like an eternity.

Alongside his thoughts, Scott expressed regret that he didn’t maintain a greater stake in the franchise. This sentiment stemmed not just from dissatisfaction with some of the subsequent Alien movies, but also due to his desire for more involvement in the creation of follow-ups like Covenant.

The director explained that he had watched “Alien 2”, “3”, and “4” and found himself thinking, “Wow, they really drove this concept into the ground.” He then approached Tom Rothman with a solution: revive the “Alien” franchise through “Prometheus”. This move earned them half a billion dollars, likely now over a billion with additional sales. The success isn’t just about box office figures; it’s also about what happens after the initial release. With “Alien: Covenant”, he created something big and intellectually challenging, but perhaps too complex for widespread appeal. It still grossed $250 million, yet he lamented that he didn’t secure full control of the franchise. He doesn’t blame himself because he was occupied, but rather a few other individuals, which led to our separation.

Scott’s most recent comments are a cryptic tease about his future with the franchise, at best, but between an upcoming Romulus follow-up and the newfound excitement for the series, there’s lots of storytelling potential for Scott and other filmmakers to explore.

Stay tuned for updates on the future of the Alien franchise.
