Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition May Have Leaked

As a long-time fan who has witnessed the meteoric rise of Larian Studios, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia at the rumors of a Definitive Edition for Divinity: Original Sin 2. Seven years ago, I was captivated by the rich world of Rivellon in this masterpiece, and now it seems we might be returning to it, albeit with improved graphics and mechanics that have been honed through their subsequent work on Baldur’s Gate 3.

Following the phenomenal achievement of Baldur’s Gate 3, it appears Larian Studios is gearing up to revisit Rivellon for an enhanced adventure. First introduced in 2017 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC as Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition, there are whispers that a native next-gen version may soon be available, given a recent Pan-European Game Information rating hints at this possibility.

It’s common practice to obtain an audience rating prior to release, but Larian Studios hasn’t disclosed any Divinity-related projects yet. However, it appears that some information about a potential project has been leaked this time, as PEGI (the European equivalent of ESRB) has assigned an 18+ rating to the game. This rating was given due to one scene involving crucifixion. Given the game’s overall dark content, this is just one of many mature themes in the game.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition May Have Leaked

As a passionate gamer, I must admit, it’s quite unexpected to hear about Larian Studios considering a remake of the classic game we all love – Baldur’s Gate 3. Initially, I thought they were focused on creating something fresh post-Baldur’s Gate 3. But upon reflection, it makes perfect sense. Why not leverage the advanced tools developed for its successor to breathe new life into a beloved title? After all, who wouldn’t want to experience an improved version of their favorite game?

For those who might be new to it, “Divinity: Original Sin 2” was Larian Studios’ final game before starting work on “BG3”, and its popularity played a significant role in Hasbro partnering with the renowned RPG developer. Fans of Baldur’s Gate will find a comfortable fit as they delve into the game for the first time, as both titles share numerous similarities. They both offer players an expansive isometric adventure, allowing them to either craft their own distinctive character or choose from several “origin” options, with each choice providing unique interactions and dialogues. The intricate narrative paths, heartfelt NPC interactions, destructible environments (and status effects) that Baldur’s Gate introduced were first perfected in “DOS2”.

For longtime enthusiasts, this is just the beginning of the excitement. This initial offering might merely serve as a teaser for Larian Studios’ future projects. Although we haven’t received concrete details about their upcoming game yet, remarks from founder Swen Vincke hint that it will be something worth looking forward to. It’s quite an ambitious goal, but considering they’ve produced three critically acclaimed games in succession, it’s not impossible to imagine them pulling it off.

It’s unfortunate that the upcoming game might be several years off, but since it seems the developers are continuing to provide post-launch updates and even Mod Manager updates for console players with BG3, waiting doesn’t seem so difficult.

Currently, there’s no information available regarding when the Definitive Edition will be released or if players who already own the last-gen version can upgrade for free/at a discounted price. However, it won’t be too much longer before we start hearing official updates on this matter. In summary, this surprise announcement serves as an exciting teaser for fans eagerly waiting for more enchanting experiences from Larian Studios.
