The Scooby-Doo Movies Are Now Easier to Stream Than They’ve Ever Been

As a film enthusiast who grew up in the golden age of Scooby-Doo, I can’t help but feel nostalgic when thinking about the live-action films from the early 2000s. The original movie and its sequel, Monsters Unleashed, were gems that should never have been lost to time. Thanks to YouTube, we can now revisit these classics for free (well, almost free, considering the ads).

In the first part of this century, a wealth of timeless pop culture icons emerged, and the live-action Scooby-Doo movies were certainly among them. This band of crime-fighting heroes has remained popular for decades, with each generation enjoying their own version of Scooby snacks. With streaming services becoming increasingly prevalent, it’s easy for certain gems to get overlooked. Unfortunately, two such forgotten treasures are the classic Warner Bros. films “Scooby-Doo” from 2002 and its sequel “Monsters Unleashed,” released in 2004.

Fortunately, YouTube is stepping up to offer movies for free streaming, albeit with commercial breaks attached. Noteworthy, the live-action Scooby-Doo series features Freddie Prinze Jr. donning a fancy scarf as blonde-haired Fred Jones; Sarah Michelle Gellar portraying trendsetter Daphne Blake; Matthew Lillard bringing humor as laidback stoner Shaggy; and Linda Cardellini taking charge as intelligent Velma Dinkley.

In the initial movie, earnings reached approximately $250 million globally, with a production budget of around $84 million. Following this massive box office hit, the cast (excluding Prinze Jr.) demanded higher wages upon rejoining for the sequel. According to Prinze Jr., he was outraged when asked to accept a salary reduction so that their compensation could be increased, as reported in Esquire.

In response to hearing about their employees receiving a raise, Prinze Jr. expressed his surprise by saying, “Hang on, are they getting the raise from you or all of us? After all, we’ve made your company nearly three-quarters of a billion dollars. Can’t you afford to pay them what I’m making?” He then added, “I think not.” The sequel, which was set on Spooky Island, only earned $180 million and was criticized as a box office failure by reviewers.

Previously this year, the director of the franchise, James Gunn, disclosed some information about whether a sequel was actually intended to be produced. As per Gunn, there were plans outlined in his contract, but they decided to end their collaboration following the response to “Monsters Unleashed”. Gunn stated on Threads that he had an agreement to write and direct the third movie, but the second one being profitable didn’t justify a third film. Therefore, he chose to work on “Slither” instead.

2020 saw James Gunn disclose that if produced, the Mystery Inc. gang would’ve ventured to Scotland in a film. They were employed by a town troubled by monsters. Interestingly, these so-called monsters were actually the ones being victimized. In his writing, Gunn mentioned, “Scooby and Shaggy will confront their own biases and limited perspectives” – yes, this is true!
