New Update May Spell Trouble for the Future of the PS5 Pro

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I find the news about the development time for PS5 Pro-enhanced games particularly intriguing. The dedication shown by smaller studios like Hello Games, as evident in their work on No Man’s Sky, is nothing short of commendable.

A potential announcement from the creator of a launch title for the PS5 Pro suggests that the high-end PlayStation console might encounter some challenges down the line. Interestingly, without any modifications, the PS5 Pro is expected to provide slightly improved gaming performance compared to the regular PS5. Moreover, certain PS5 games are labeled as “enhanced” for the PS5 Pro, indicating that their developers have put in extra effort to optimize and upgrade these games specifically for the enhanced capabilities of the PS5 Pro.

Among the PS5 Pro-optimized games, there’s No Man’s Sky, developed by the UK-based studio Hello Games. Despite being one of the notable titles from the previous console era, Hello Games isn’t as prominent as other industry giants. Their workforce is estimated to be around 50 people, which is smaller than typical AAA studios but larger than most independent ones.

Speaking of it, Martin Griffiths, a software engineer at Hello Games who specializes in engines, shared that he dedicated around four to five months to ensure No Man’s Sky was ready for PlayStation 5 Pro. In other words, it’s likely that Hello Games invested at least four to five months into developing the game for PS5 Pro, and possibly a lot more time beyond that.

Over the past year, I’ve dedicated approximately four to five months of my time to developing PS5 Pro support for our team. Given that we are one of the smallest teams launching a game today and one of the few offering both 4K and 8K resolution as well as PSVR2 compatibility, this project has been quite challenging. However, I’m incredibly proud to have contributed to this release, and I hope everyone enjoys it!

This seems quite significant given that so much effort and funds are being poured into updating a game specifically for the PS5 Pro. If this level of time is required to enhance games for the PS5 Pro, it might pose challenges for the system. While major AAA studios may have the means to dedicate resources for the console, meeting these deadlines and demands could strain indie and even AA studios.

If it turns out to be correct, it may lead to less games optimized for the hypothetical PS5 Pro. This could potentially pose issues for both consumers and Sony, as they aim to promote the high-end PS5 at a $700 price point over the next few years.
