As I delve into the lives of these extraordinary women, I am struck by their resilience, ambition, and unwavering dedication to making a difference. Kamala Harris, the Vice President of the United States, is a beacon of hope and inspiration. Her journey from being a young girl in Oakland to becoming one of the most powerful women in the world is nothing short of remarkable. Her ability to balance her personal life with her political ambitions, while maintaining a strong bond with her family, is truly commendable.
Ella Emhoff, Kamala Harris’ stepdaughter, has dismissed rumors about her supposed health issues following her emotional display during the 2024 presidential election results. She took to Instagram to clarify that she is not hospitalized due to a mental breakdown, and she expressed her displeasure towards those spreading such false reports.
Kerstin, mother of Cole Emhoff, tweeted, “Keep my children away!!! Ella is having a wonderful day with her mom and I’m grateful for that. Expressing emotions is something we all strive for. It’s alright if you aren’t feeling fantastic at the moment. We won’t let anyone disrupt our family bond.
After the election where her stepmother lost to Donald Trump, the 25-year-old conveyed a message filled with optimism.
She expressed, “We’ll make it through together,” she noted under a picture of her watching Harris’ concession speech. “I know it feels incredibly painful at the moment, and that’s alright.
She went on to say, “The struggle isn’t over yet,” emphasizing the importance of reaching out to those around you at this critical moment. “Now more than ever, it’s crucial to rally together, take action, and create change, whether in large or small communities.
Speaking from the hallowed grounds of my esteemed alma mater, Howard University, on November 6th, I echoed sentiments that resonated deeply with me.
Today, my heart swells with an abundance of gratitude for your faith in me, a deep affection for our nation, and a steadfast determination. The results of this election may not align with our aspirations or the battles we’ve waged, but let me assure you, the beacon of America’s promise remains undimmed, as long as we continue to persevere and keep fighting.
To those among you who are young and tuned in, remember that it’s perfectly fine to experience feelings of sadness and disappointment. But also understand, things will get better.
In other words, Harris stated that sometimes progress may take time, but it doesn’t indicate that we can’t prevail in the end. What truly matters is never losing hope and continuously striving to improve our world.

Shyamala Gopalan and Donald J. Harris were both born in 1938, with Shyamala hailing from southern India and Donald from Jamaica. In 2020, when speaking to Glamour, Cole’s eldest described the encounter as “an amazing dinner.” He went on to say that upon meeting her, he realized that Doug had found someone exceptional and unique. It was love at first sight for all of them. Cole graduated from Colorado College in 2017. As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but reminisce about my extraordinary encounter with Kamala Harris back when she was just starting her political journey. Ella Emhoff, a young artist born in 1999, sharing the same namesake as the legendary Ella Fitzgerald, recounts our meeting as if we were old friends reunited. In an interview with Glamour, she recalled, “It felt like we had known each other for years.
Among those closest to Harris is her younger sister, Maya Harris.
“We leaned on each other,” the 49th Vice President told The Washington Post in 2019. “We forged a bond that is unbreakable. When I think about it, all of the joyous moments in our lives, all of the challenging moments, all of the moments of transition, we have always been together.”
As her bio notes, Maya served as a campaign chairperson during Harris’ 2020 presidential run and later championed her run for VP alongside President Joe Biden. Previously, she worked as a senior policy advisor to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her 2016 presidential campaign.
Born in 1967, Maya graduated from University of California, Berkeley and then received her law degree from Stanford Law School. Her résumé includes leadership positions at the Ford Foundation and ACLU of Northern California, a senior fellow role at the Center for American Progress, a visiting scholar apppointment at Harvard Law School and author contribution to The Covenant with Black America.
Maya is married to Tony West, former Associate Attorney General and current Chief Legal Officer at Uber, and is mom to daughter Meena Harris.
1984 saw my birth as the niece of Harris. I walked the halls of Stanford University for undergrad studies, then continued at Harvard Law School. Besides my legal career, I’ve held significant roles at Facebook, Slack, and Uber.
