Why Idina Menzel Says Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo Didn’t Need Her Advice

As a seasoned observer with a keen eye for talent and a heart full of admiration, I must say that the star-studded event at the premiere of “Wicked” left me absolutely spellbound! With a career spanning over three decades, I have seen my fair share of red carpets, but the sheer energy, passion, and creativity exuded by these young artists was truly breathtaking.

Cynthia Erivo didn’t need to look to the western sky to find Elphaba—it was in her all along.

As a lifestyle expert, I find myself reflecting on the wisdom shared by the incredibly talented Idina Menzel, who breathed life into the unforgettable Witch of the West in the original Broadway production of “Wicked.” Interestingly enough, she explained why Cynthia Erivo, her successor, didn’t require any notes to embody the character. In her own words, it was because Cynthia had already demonstrated a deep understanding and connection with Elphaba that transcended the need for additional guidance. It’s truly inspiring to witness such artistic chemistry between performers!

Idina shared with Justin Sylvester and Zuri Hall during the Nov. 9 red carpet event for the movie premiere in Los Angeles, “I didn’t see the necessity to offer advice to Cynthia because she’s already thriving and is a natural powerhouse all on her own.

Additionally, Idina Menzel hinted at what moviegoers might anticipate from the actress of Harriet, once the film is released in theaters on November 22nd.

The actress from Frozen stated, ‘She’s flawlessly imperfect in this film, which embodies Elphaba perfectly.’ She fully captures Elphaba’s essence – her uniqueness, her differences, her power, and her passion. In a way, these qualities reflect Cynthia as a person, but she has beautifully incorporated them into her role.

The 53-year-old also noted that there was one thing she did pass on to Cynthia amid entering into the wonderful world of Wicked

She emphasized, “Just savor the moment, that’s crucial.” She explained, “It’s fleeting at times, so we should cherish it.

In the early 2000s, Idina Menzel played Elphaba opposite Kristin Chenoweth’s Glinda (or Ariana Grande in the film adaptation) for a 16-month stint on Broadway. Together, they transformed this musical into the cultural phenomenon it is today. However, as Idina confessed during that period, their focus was solely on the two witches on stage and the women portraying them.

Idina mused about the unexpected magnitude of the Broadway show’s influence. “Initially, we hadn’t anticipated it would turn out this way,” she said. “However, Kristin and I found ourselves instinctively connecting, offering support on a deeper level, almost intuitively. It’s crucial to remember why you’re there – because this is a dream come true for both of us, the chance to grace the Broadway stage, and because we have such powerful music and a compelling narrative that deserves to be shared. In some ways, it allows us to step back and let it shine.

Indeed, Idina also mentioned that she could sense the remarkable influence of the show during its very first opening performance, stating, “There was an undeniable feeling that this was going to be extraordinary.

The enchanted actress, who mentioned she and Kristin have developed friendships with Ariana and Cynthia, underscored that the latest portrayals of Elphaba and Glinda, along with director Jon M. Chu and the entire team behind the upcoming movie, have faithfully honored the story.

Idina enthusiastically praised the tender and reverent remake, saying, “We’re thrilled and honored to be a part of such a cherished heritage, and Kristin and I can hardly contain our excitement and pride!
