Secrets About The Notebook Revealed

Twenty-plus years later, it still isn’t over.

Initially, people didn’t anticipate “The Notebook,” adapted from the best-selling novel by Nicholas Sparks, to evolve into an eternal love story when it debuted on June 25, 2004. However, this heart-wrenching film left a lasting impact on cinema-goers and popular culture. It not only surprised as a box office success but also catapulted Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams into one of Hollywood’s most adored on-and-off-screen couples.

Even Nick Cassavetes, the film’s director and the actors themselves, were taken aback by the publicized disputes between them.

Only a few spectators realized that the two leading actors had a hard time getting along on set due to their apparent magical chemistry, and it was also unknown to viewers that they were not the original choices for the unforgettable roles of Noah and Allie. Originally, Tom Cruise was intended to play the charming carpenter character.

By this point, it’s likely you’ve come across Britney Spears’ audition for the role of Allie. However, it’s worth mentioning that Britney was not the sole celeb on the list of potential candidates.

During a 2025 interview on “The View”, Jessica Biel described her recollection as follows: “In my mind, I can still picture myself covered in blood and wearing that white tank top,” she said, sharing her experience of auditioning for her role in the slasher movie “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”. “I removed my cowboy hat, then I told them, ‘Alright, let’s fall in love. Let’s give this a try.’

She shared that the chemistry test happened inside a trailer, and then added, “It felt quite unusual, almost like a scene straight out of a movie set.

But in the end, there was only one bird for Noah, though Gosling did try and get McAdams recast.

Let’s skip the small talk about preferences, as we’ve got a juicy insider scoop for you! We’re here to spill the beans about the captivating romance that unfolded on set – not the off-screen love story between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. So, grab some tissues, sit back, and get ready to be swept away by these behind-the-scenes secrets about the cult classic film’s love story!

It’s surprising to know that “The Notebook” was inspired by real-life events. At the time, author Nicholas Sparks was wedded to Cathy Cote, whose grandparents had been in a relationship spanning more than six decades.

Can you imagine Tom Cruise as Noah? Well, it almost happened.

Following New Line’s acquisition of the novel rights in 1996, Steven Spielberg showed a keen interest in helming the film adaptation. His initial choice for the lead role was none other than the charismatic star from “Top Gun”. Regrettably, scheduling issues hindered this collaboration, and the project lay dormant until director Nick Cassavetes entered the picture. Immediately captivated by Ryan Gosling’s talent, Cassavetes sought to cast him as the lead; however, the studio required some persuasion before agreeing.

Cassavetes confided to VH1 that when he expressed his intention to employ Ryan as the main character, New Line Cinema seemed to regard him as if he were not entirely sane.

Gosling was a little surprised, too, especially after his first meeting with the director.

In an interview with the British magazine Company, it was shared that Nick Cassavetes contacted me to meet him at his residence. Upon arrival, I found him in his backyard. He then explained to the publication, “I called you here because I want you for this role. You’re not like other young actors in Hollywood; you’re neither conventionally attractive nor trendy, but rather an ordinary man with a touch of madness.

Before appearing in “Mean Girls” or “Wedding Crashers”, Rachel McAdams was not widely recognized. To secure the role of Allie, she had to work diligently during auditions. As Cassavetes put it, “She was outstanding. Many studios wouldn’t have had the boldness to cast two relatively unrecognized actors in a film like this. But they did, and oh, were they impressive!

Prior to McAdams securing the part of Allie, another of Gosling’s fellow actors from their Mickey Mouse Club days was initially under consideration: none other than Britney Spears, a global superstar and close friend of his.

As a devoted admirer, I must say it had been quite some time since I last crossed paths with her, around the age of 12 – we were both twelve at that moment in time. Over the years, she’s matured into an impressive individual. During our chemistry test, as Ryan Gosling recounted, she truly excelled, giving a commendable performance. Despite my limited recall of my experiences from when I was 12, her portrayal stood out distinctly well. To put it simply, it was cool!

McAdams wasn’t aware that the “Toxic” singer was being considered for the role until after filming had wrapped up. She commented, “I think it would have been a completely different movie.” She felt lucky, as she was almost last in line for the role, and she knew they had traveled across the country searching for the right girl, but she managed to slip in just under the wire.

Additionally, the well-known actress Jessica Biel also tried out for the role of Allie, expressing her strong desire to be selected for the part.

In an interview with Elle, she reminisced about being on set filming “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” when Ryan Gosling auditioned for her in her blood-soaked trailer. Director Nick Cassavetes pushed her to her limits in a challenging and creatively stimulating manner. However, as she put it, there are countless opportunities that slip through our fingers. We seem to crave hardship. It’s just another form of rejection.

Initially, Ryan Gosling and Eve Mendes had a rocky start in their relationship, as portrayed by Cassavetes. In fact, things got so tense that Gosling attempted to have Mendes replaced on set at some point.

One day on set, they seemed to have major disagreements or tension, as Cassavetes shared with VH1. In the midst of a large scene, Ryan approached me and said, “Nick, come here.” He was working alongside Rachel at the time, and he requested, “Could you please remove her from here and bring in another actress to read lines off-camera with me?” I was taken aback, as I replied, “What?” To which he responded, “I can’t continue this scene with her. I’m just not getting any response or connection from her.

So how was it fixed? He let his stars hash their s–t out.

In a room with the producer, we found ourselves in a heated argument. Feeling uncomfortable, I decided to leave. At that moment, I happened to be puffing on a cigarette. After taking a drag, everyone seemed to calm down and say, “Alright, let’s move forward.” From then on, things improved, though the rest of the film production wasn’t entirely smooth. However, it became less turbulent after that incident, as Cassavetes noted. This was when Rachel asserted her character and gained respect from Ryan, making the remaining process a bit easier.

In 2013, McAdams clarified that they weren’t displaying animosity towards each other like breaking Ming vases, but instead their off-screen relationship wasn’t as romantic as it appeared in the movie. To put it simply, they were both strictly professional during filming.

Indeed, viewers became just as eager to pair Gosling and McAdams together as they did Noah and Allie. After all, who can forget the memorable on-screen kiss they shared during their award acceptance for Best Kiss at the 2005 MTV Movie Awards?

Later on, Gosling confessed that he wasn’t sure how their professional relationship transformed into a romantic one. “It was only two years later when I bumped into her in New York that we began to suspect we might have misunderstood each other,” he added.

Gosling and McAdams were together for three years, eventually parting ways permanently in 2009. Although neither actor publicly explained the reason behind their separation, Gosling later shared insights into their remarkable relationship.

In a conversation with GQ, I expressed my gratitude towards “The Notebook” as it played a significant role in introducing one of the profoundest loves I’ve ever known to me. However, it’s essential to clarify that Rachel and I are not like the characters portrayed in the movie. Our love story is far more enchanting than what the film presents.

There’s a certain instance where Noah (played by Gosling) queries Allie, “What is it that you desire? What do you truly long for?” Interestingly, Gosling came up with this line on the spot, as Cassavetes shared, and he felt confident that it would make it into the final cut of the film.

In his own words, Cassavetes stated, “[The famous scene] wasn’t part of the script initially, but he (the actor) had a brilliant idea and simply knew it would work.” As someone who appreciates literature and the written word, I can admit that I was surprised by this approach. However, given my fondness for improvisation as well, I found it acceptable. He was so in tune with his performance that we decided to let him run with it.

During the movie, Ryan Gosling switched from his blue eyes to brown contacts to match the character played by James Garner in his later years since Garner had brown eyes. Despite Gosling’s concern for continuity, the veteran actor (who unfortunately passed away in July 2014) didn’t seem to mind too much. In fact, Cassavetes mentioned that Gosling asked Garner about accents, which led to an amusingly awkward exchange.

[Ryan] commented on accents, noting there are various kinds in South Carolina – some rural and so forth. [Garner] responded, “I don’t bother with accents, kid. They’re foolish,” Cassavetes added. [Ryan] then asked, “What about eye color? I have blue eyes; you have brown.” Garner replied, “Everyone knows Jim Garner has brown eyes. You do as you please, kid.” [Ryan] then said, “I suppose I’ll wear contact lenses. What about hair?” And he was told, “Do whatever you want, kid. Nice to meet you. See you later.” Ryan looked at me and said, “Keep quiet, don’t say a word.” Thus, it serves as an illustration of two distinct acting approaches – both highly successful in their own ways.

An instance showing Ryan Gosling taking method acting a step too far was his proposal to set fire to Noah’s house symbolically, reflecting his emotions. According to Cassavetes, “He’d approach me and ask, ‘Why can’t I burn the house down?'” He responded, “Because I don’t understand what that implies.” To which Gosling replied, “Purging my inner flame!

Gosling’s idea didn’t make the final cut.

In a unique turn of events, Cassavetes didn’t need to search far and wide for the perfect actress to portray the grown-up Allie. That role was filled by none other than Gena Rowlands, who is his mother, and John Cassavetes, the late director, who also appears in the movie in a way. The photos depicting Allie and Noah over the years are actually personal snaps of Rowlands and her husband, with Garner’s face cleverly superimposed.

Producer Mark Johnson recounted that he had never heard a director address someone as ‘Action, Mom’ before. However, she behaved towards him as if he were her director. Despite this, he maintained a professional demeanor, and it was clear to us all that he was her son.

Back in 2016, I confessed to Variety that I was taken aback by the film’s lasting popularity. “I never imagined it would resonate this strongly,” I admitted. What made it a blockbuster, I believe, was its exploration of love enduring throughout one’s life. It’s not often we witness such a portrayal on screen. Typically, films don’t delve into a narrative that follows the journey of love from its inception to its potential eternity.

At the tender age of 23, Gosling relocated to Charleston a couple of months prior to the filming, engaging in activities such as rowing on the Ashley River and crafting furniture. He even served an apprenticeship with a local cabinet-maker. As he shared with People magazine, “We built all the Adirondack chairs in front of the house.” The duo spent a significant amount of time lounging in these very chairs.

By the way, did you catch the scene where Rachel and I shared our romantic moment on the table I constructed in Noah’s house, as Gosling disclosed? “That table was the setting for us to express our love,” he said. “However, I couldn’t take it home. It was made from a unique type of wood, and the agreement was that the craftsman would keep it. Yet, he remains unaware of the special moment we shared on it.

McAdams prepared extensively for her role before filming, including living in South Carolina for several months, mastering the Southern accent through dialect lessons, and embracing the local culture. She confessed that Cassavetes made her attend ballet and etiquette classes, and she even attended a few weddings and conversed with some high-society young women.

The director also asked her to intensify her exercise routine. “I hadn’t been that rigorously trained before,” McAdams explained. “I was even consuming protein supplements.” Eventually, she confided in her trainer, indicating her bicep and stating, “This is no longer suitable for the 1940s; it’s surpassed even the pin-up girl ideal. So we needed to scale back the muscle development.

In the movie, a particularly striking scene nearly got left out during editing, as Cassavetes disclosed that the studio had doubts about capturing Noah and Allie on their boat surrounded by numerous birds.

He stated, “They told me that incorporating the birds wasn’t feasible due to numerous complications. They explained that they consulted multiple animal handlers and found out that managing untrained birds on set would be impossible.

However, Cassavetes was adamant about the scene, going as far as raising birds on the set itself, for the purpose of filming them later.

He told us about his experience: “We descended to purchase a semi-like trailer, interacted with some people who work with animals, bought numerous hatchlings and raised them as chicks. Each day we would take them to the lake and feed them there. By the time the filming began, they had grown a bit, but we had been feeding them at the lake every day. This was impressive to the studio when they came to observe the scene, as they didn’t believe we could manage it. During their visit, he led the chicks out to the lake like the Pied Piper, and amazingly, they followed him! We were delighted to showcase this on a technical level because the birds are so stunning.

Though the intense kiss between Noah and Allie during the rain scene in the movie is often hailed as one of the most memorable on-screen romances, it wasn’t particularly pleasant for the actors themselves. As McAdams shared, “We just wanted to escape the cold rain. It was freezing!” Additionally, she noted that while the dress used in the film was specifically designed, many of the items she wore were rented and dated back to the 1940s, making them fragile and prone to tearing.

In truth, Allie’s feet were unshod during that particular shot as McAdams’ shoes fell apart on set.

In the film version of The Notebook, the passionate scene between Noah and Allie needed to be adjusted before its release in order to receive a PG-13 rating. Director Nick Cassavetes explained, “I didn’t want young viewers watching things that are inappropriate for their age,” adding, “I aimed to capture the intensity of their sexual attraction, but we never crossed the line into explicit content.

He described himself as “conservative” and mentioned, “I’m rather reserved. I don’t advocate for public display of intimate body parts. It’s not primarily about morals for me, but more so about feeling awkward. That’s just my nature. However, the challenge lies in the fact that sexuality plays a significant role in relationships between men and women, and it needs to be portrayed. There’s an intimacy inherent in this.

It’s possible that his disappointment might have stemmed from his character Lon Hammond Jr.’s unrequited love in the film, but James Marsden himself confessed to Out magazine that he hadn’t anticipated the movie would become successful.

He stated, “I didn’t intentionally create a poor film, but sometimes films don’t turn out as planned. There are moments when I feel like shouting, ‘Why was that scene chosen?!’ However, there have been movies in which I’ve participated that I believed would be laughed at, yet they became massive hits. I initially thought The Notebook would be a typical Movie of the Week, but look at us now!
