As a gamer who has grown up with the stealthy exploits of Solid Snake, I eagerly await the arrival of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. With a decade-long hiatus between major releases, it’s high time for newcomers to experience the tactical brilliance that is the Metal Gear series.
In 2015, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom was the final major installment of the Metal Gear Solid series, though we don’t consider Metal Gear: Survive as part of that. If Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater releases in 2025 as planned, it will have been a decade since the last game.
Due to the significant time lapse between major “Metal Gear” releases, there’s a strong possibility that newer gamers may not be familiar with this classic stealth series. Additionally, there aren’t many AAA stealth games being developed currently. Thus, it falls heavily on “Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater” to attract new fans to the franchise while preserving the legacy of “Metal Gear”. This view is shared by the series producer Noriaki Okamura as well.
In an interview for Play Magazine’s Issue 46, Okamura shared that a key objective for the upcoming remake is to make the series appealing and accessible to new fans.
Okamura mentioned that one reason they decided to remake the game was because they noticed that many newer, younger gamers are no longer familiar with the Metal Gear series.
Our goal and responsibility were to ensure the series persists for future generations. Just like DNA isn’t our only legacy, as Solid Snake might put it (and you may wonder, who is Solid Snake?).
From Okamura’s statements, it appears evident that Konami plans to continue supporting the Metal Gear series for an extended period. However, whether they will create remakes or new games is still uncertain. In the past, Okamura has discussed the potential of revamping classic titles like Metal Gear 1 (1987), Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990), and Metal Gear Solid (1998). Yet, he also acknowledged the difficulties that might arise during such a project. Moreover, Okamura expressed an interest in collaborating with Hideo Kojima on the Metal Gear franchise, but he realizes that this might not be feasible due to people’s evolving responsibilities.
The game “Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater” is planned for release on PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. Originally slated for this year, its release now appears less probable. However, as the development of the game seems to be complete with polishing left to do, a release in the next year seems plausible.
Regardless of the circumstances, it appears that the remake of “Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater” is shaping up to be a faithful recreation, boasting numerous enhancements aimed at satisfying long-time fans. Whether it will achieve both critical and commercial success remains uncertain, but there’s certainly high expectation riding on “Snake Eater.
Let’s hope it delivers.
