This exciting news was shared at Disney’s D23 Brasil on November 9th, with fortunate fans getting an early look. As of now, the footage hasn’t been released online, but speculation among fans about Storm’s potential role is already buzzing.
The third season of the popular show “What If…?” premieres on Disney+ this coming Sunday, December 22nd. This new installment promises exciting crossovers and lesser-known storylines for fans to enjoy. At D23 Brazil, sneak peeks were shown, one of which depicted Storm picking up Thor’s hammer Mjolnir, marking her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in this animated series. As of now, it’s still unclear who will lend their voice to Storm, but a rumor from Nexus Point News suggests that Alison Sealy-Smith, the actress who played Storm in “X-Men ’97,” might be cast for this role.
At D23, attendees were treated to a sneak peek of Sam Wilson reprising his role for What If…?‘s Season 3, with Anthony Mackie once again lending his voice. The teaser offered glimpses of characters like Khahori, White Vision, Ice Giant Loki, Uatu, and additional Watchers, leaving fans excited to guess the plotlines this season might explore and how they may tie into storylines from older comics. Regarding Storm and Mjolnir, there’s a notable precedent for this combination.
In 1985’s X-Men Annual #9, Chris Claremont and Arthur Adams bestowed a thunderous artifact called Stormcaster upon Storm. Unlike Mjolnir, Loki fashioned this weapon, conferring powers akin to Thor’s divine abilities upon its bearer, thus transforming Storm into the Goddess of Thunder. However, this newfound power made her vulnerable to Loki’s machinations. Eventually, Thor returned the hammer to Storm for a specific mission. Upon completion, it disintegrated into dust.
In “What If…?”, the narrative may not directly correlate with the main storyline or might merely hint at it. The series delves into various alternate realities stemming from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and it’s plausible that in one of these realities, Ororo Munroe wields Mjolnir. Regardless of how this occurs, Storm will be canonically included within the MCU – although she may not be a fixture in the primary timeline depicted in most movies and shows.
