As a die-hard fan of both Deadpool and Wolverine, I must say that the latest movie was a rollercoaster ride of nostalgia and humor. The inclusion of Easter eggs from various Fox movies was a clever way to pay homage to the studio’s rich history before its merger with Disney.
The movie featuring Deadpool and Wolverine was packed with Easter eggs, but it failed to acknowledge Master and Commander. However, it playfully mocked 20th Century Fox by inserting famous scenes from its films prior to the merger with Disney into the void. Some viewers speculated that a colonial-era ship spotted in the background of one scene might have been a discreet reference to Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, but director Shawn Levy has since clarified that this was not the case.
In the podcast on The Awardist, Levy sat down with actors Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. During the interview, he was asked if the old ship might be a reference to Master and Commander, but he wasn’t certain. He responded by saying “I believe the answer is yes.” However, after the interview, he contacted the visual effects team for clarification and later corrected his statement in Entertainment Weekly. He explained that the ship was actually a generic one from their library, which they then customized by changing its color and creating unique sails. In essence, it was a ship specifically designed for Deadpool and the X-Men (DP&W) series.
Initially, Levy was pondering a response when Reynolds interjected with an additional thought: “Additionally, the Titanic was another possibility, but it shifted several times.” As they continued, Levy seemed to recall, saying: “You’re correct. The Titanic was initially part of it. There are some references related to Fox, such as Nakatomi Tower [from Die Hard] and surprisingly, the CN Tower as well. So, Canada is well-represented!
The director emphasized, “The top concept will prevail.” He then shared with the entire Visual Effects team, “We may not have exhausted all knowledge about Easter eggs and references, but we’re eager for every creative thought you have to share.
In addition to these humorous surprise appearances in the film, we saw a collapsing Fox emblem, a wrecked helicarrier previously owned by S.H.I.E.L.D., and Peter Quill’s spaceship from “Guardians of the Galaxy.” This comedic element was a clever twist on an alternate reality that was initially presented in Loki. At that time, the idea wasn’t as amusing, but it demonstrates the adaptability of such storytelling methods.
The podcast interview included plenty of other fun tidbits from Levy, Reynolds and Jackman, including some of the cameos that didn’t work out. Their movie is nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, and many are expecting it to get more award buzz next year.
The movie featuring Deadpool and Wolverine has had an incredibly popular stint in cinemas, and since October 1st, it can be purchased or rented on DVD, Blu-ray, and digital HD. Beginning on Tuesday, November 12th, it will be accessible to stream on Disney+.
