As a long-time Batman enthusiast who has seen countless iterations of the Dark Knight, I must say that The Penguin spinoff series has truly impressed me with its standalone storytelling and character development. The seventh episode, “A Great or Little Thing,” showcased the Penguin’s (Colin Farrell) metamorphosis from a gangster underdog to a ruthless crime boss, all without relying on Batman cameos or name-drops.
In a surprising move reminiscent of the cunning villain it’s named after, “The Penguin” series has displayed an equal amount of ambition, aiming to create a Batman spinoff not focused on Batman himself. Over the course of seven episodes, The Penguin largely demonstrated its suitability for airtime without relying excessively on appearances or references from Bruce Wayne or Batman – except perhaps in the nail-biting cliffhanger of the sixth episode. In the final moments of “The Penguin” Episode 7, Sofia Falcone executed a bombing so destructive that viewers nearly pleaded for Batman to appear and take responsibility for it.
Does The Batman Appear In The Penguin Finale?
In a way, The Penguin’s last scene offers a recognition to Batman – illuminated by his signature Bat-signal against Gotham’s night sky. This moment can be seen as a transition point, with showrunner Lauren LeFranc guiding the character and the broader Batman universe away from the mob story arc and towards the Matt Reeves Batman film series. The journey continues with “The Batman: Part II” scheduled for 2026.
The Penguin’s Batman “Cameo” Explained (SPOILERS)
In the episode “A Great or Little Thing” from The Penguin Finale, character Oz Cobb (played by Colin Farrell) found himself confronting his formidable adversary, Sofia Falcone (portrayed by Cristin Milioti), to protect his mother Francis Cobb (Deirdre O’Connell). To accomplish this, Oz orchestrated a plan where he lured each of the underbosses from the various Gotham mobs controlled by Sofia into a deadly power struggle, aiming for the top positions in a single, massive coup. This allowed him to rescue his mother and emerge victorious amidst the Gotham mob conflict that Sofia had instigated.
In the end, Oz does not eliminate Sofia; instead, he strikes a fresh agreement with the crooked city councilman who’s on Falcone’s payroll. This deal involves framing “The Hangman” for the entire Falcone-Maroni gang war, the distribution of the drug Bliss throughout the city, and the bombing of Crown Point. Sofia returns to Arkham, while Oz leverages his new mob boss status to ascend from the streets into Gotham’s political sphere.
The cost is high, though: Francis is left in a vegetative state after suffering a stroke during the showdown with Sofia; Oz is broken emotionally at winning the crime war but losing his “ma,” and brutally murders his right-hand man Victor Aguilar (Rhenzy Feliz) on the notion that significant emotional attachments only weaken him. “Penguin” is left to be the king of his own twisted kingdom: living in a top penthouse, with his mother (who begged for mercy killing if she became debilitated) as his prisoner, forcing his prostitute “girlfriend” Eve (Carmen Ejogo) to dress as his mom, dance with him, and shower him with motherly pride.
It’s only when Eve is praising Oz excessively, making him believe nothing can halt his progress now, that we cut to a scene of the Bat-signal illuminating the sky beyond the penthouse, hinting that maintaining his power might prove more challenging than its acquisition.
Where Has Batman Been?
It’s now up to Matt Reeves and the creators of “The Batman: Part II” to offer a plausible rationale for why Batman has emerged again amidst a significant mob conflict – one involving the Falcone family massacre, Sal Maroni’s daring prison break, and a bombing in Crown Point, an incident that Batman, considering his past encounters with the Riddler, should be particularly concerned about.
It appears strange that despite Bruce Wayne remaining in Gotham, he didn’t put on his suit to handle street issues. However, considering the intricate world and character development Matt Reeves and LeFrance have delivered for The Penguin, it’s plausible they have a larger strategy or explanation yet to be revealed.
The Penguin is streaming on Max.
