As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that The Penguin‘s finale was a masterful blend of heart-wrenching drama and edge-of-your-seat action. The way the story unfolded was nothing short of captivating, with each twist and turn leaving me on the edge of my seat.
In this captivating season, the Penguin has given us some incredibly emotional scenes, along with quite a few unexpected twists. However, even surpassing these high standards was the final episode, which managed to excel in both departments. Significant deaths in Season 1 served as pivotal moments, but it’s worth noting that the Penguin saved some of the most significant consequences for the finale. In the last act, we witnessed several deaths and one near-death experience – all of which had profound implications not just for the Penguin himself, but also for Gotham City as a whole. We’re about to delve into every detail, so beware of major spoilers ahead!
A Mother’s Hate
In summary, before a recent episode, it was clear that Oz’s relationship with his mother, Francis, was strained. However, this episode uncovered the shocking truth that Oz had murdered his brothers. As the series reaches its end, it appears that their relationship becomes even more intricate when it’s disclosed that Francis was aware of Oz’s actions. This revelation comes to light due to Sofia and Dr. Rush, who have apprehended both Francine and Oz. Sofia is now resolute on exposing this brutal truth in the hope that it will be brought to light.
Following a distressing altercation where Francis confesses his dislike for Oz and stabs him with a shattered bottle, she encounters her two deceased sons, seemingly soaked in water. After conversing with them, she becomes incoherent and her sight grows hazy, causing her to collapse on the floor. Subsequently, she’s transported to the hospital, where it’s disclosed later that she endured a severe stroke. Due to her existing health condition and age, a full recovery seems unlikely.
Following Oz’s successful advancement in Gotham’s criminal realm, he ultimately secures the penthouse he had long pledged to her. Now recuperating in a hospital bed, she gazes upon the city from his new abode. In conversation with her, he discusses their achievement and his fulfillment of his vow. As the camera zooms in on Francis, it becomes evident that tears are streaming down her face. Regrettably, she remains immobile and unable to respond.

A Violent Takeover
As long as Francis lives, her situation isn’t particularly promising or uplifting, despite Oz believing he’s now granting her desires. However, his method of fulfillment involves a brutal power grab, not only dethroning Sofia but also others. In an attempt to eliminate Oz, Sofia places a bounty on his head across the criminal families of Gotham. The one who successfully delivers him first will inherit her kingdom, as she is preparing to abandon Gotham.
Link contacts Vic to find out if Oz is with him, as Link was the one who intervened during Vic’s fervent speech about reclaiming their city, preventing Vic from getting shot. Later, Sofia receives a call indicating that her family has apprehended Oz, and they arrange a meeting for the exchange. However, things take an unexpected turn when Oz smiles and Link, along with the rest of Sofia’s family, slay Francois and all of Sofia’s men.
In simpler terms, Oz informs Sofia that the powerful figures were preoccupied with self-indulgence, failing to see that those around them were suffering from hunger. Link is one among many who share this viewpoint. This negligence ultimately results in the crime bosses’ underlings plotting their demises in different methods, all while maintaining some level of loyalty to Penguin. As a consequence, all the top figures are now deceased, and new leaders will rise to power moving forward.
The Death That Hurts Most
Following the seizure of power, Oz and Vic stand side by side, gazing out over the city, savoring their triumph with a shared beverage. Oz praises Vic for his excellent work and commends him for engaging Link, a shrewd decision. Oz also acknowledges that he couldn’t have accomplished this feat without Vic, and it is just the two of them celebrating their victory.
Later on, Vic thanks Oz for taking a chance on him, viewing him not just as a superior or partner, but as kin. Oz responds with “Ah, Vic”, and clarifies that the next location he’ll visit, Vic can’t accompany him. Curious, Vic inquires about this, to which Oz explains he’s discovered that family can become vulnerabilities. He puts an arm around Vic and tightens a grip, initiating a chokehold. Vic fights back and pleads with Oz to cease, but Oz appears unfazed as he commends Vic for being a fine young man with a kind heart.
It’s a heart-wrenching series of events, particularly when Vic ceases resisting. Instead of helping Vic, Oz makes him fall to the ground, then searches through his wallet and steals his money and identification. After stealing Vic’s ID, Oz looks at it before tossing it into the water as he departs.
