Nintendo and The Pokemon Company Are Seeking an Injunction Against Palworld and Payment from Pocketpair

As a long-time fan of indie games and a supporter of independent developers, I find myself deeply troubled by this ongoing legal dispute between Nintendo, The Pokemon Company, and Pocketpair over Palworld. Having seen countless promising projects stifled or derailed by larger entities asserting their intellectual property rights, I can’t help but feel a pang of concern for the future of innovative indie game development.

Approximately two months have passed since Nintendo and The Pokemon Company initiated a legal action against the creators of Palworld, Pocketpair, due to allegations of patent violation. While details regarding the lawsuit beyond this initial claim have been limited, Pocketpair has recently offered more clarity on the main aspects of the case that they are facing.

According to Pocketpair’s report, Nintendo and The Pokemon Company claim that a certain company has violated three patents. Consequently, they are asking for a court order to halt the sale of the game called Palworld, in addition to demanding payments totaling 5 million yen (including past-due payments and compensation for part of the damages) from Nintendo and The Pokemon Company respectively.

As a staunch supporter, I want to share that moving forward, we’re committed to upholding our stance in this matter through forthcoming legal actions. However, due to the sensitivity of the case, I regret to inform you that I won’t be able to respond individually to your queries. If any significant updates emerge that necessitate public disclosure, rest assured, they will be posted promptly on our official website.

In the heat of a lawsuit, I, as an independent game developer, found myself heartened by a Japanese game company’s assurance that they would strive to keep the path clear for indie creators like me. They promised to take steps to prevent us from being held back or disheartened in our pursuit of unique and innovative ideas. More details can be found here.
