As a seasoned gamer who has journeyed through countless post-apocalyptic landscapes and encountered all manner of mutated monstrosities, I can confidently say that Resistance 3 stands tall among its peers. This game took me on an emotional rollercoaster, weaving a tale of survival and resilience that felt all too real, much like the gritty coal towns I’ve passed through in my own life.
The initial experience of playing Resistance 3 in the past left a profound impact on me, as the opening scene was particularly captivating. Contrastingly, Resistance 2 began where the first game ended, with Sgt. Nathan Hale being seized by the SRPA. Without any backstory provided, his unit was swiftly under attack by an extraterrestrial race known as the Chimera, who have wreaked havoc on Earth by starting a war and even releasing a mutation virus that transforms humans into their own kind.
Hale has contracted the illness too, but before he can be questioned at a secret location, their vehicle is struck down mid-flight. Alongside Major Blake, they engage in hand-to-hand combat with an enormous Goliath and countless Chimeras. The scenario is intense, filled with bursts of action, explosions, and quick movements.
To start with, “Resistance 3” begins some time after Corporal Joseph Capelli. The Chimera’s virus now has a cure, yet they continue their relentless war against humanity. Their aim is to destroy the last human settlements, including Capelli’s hometown. The atmosphere is tense, but players aren’t thrust into the fray right away. Instead, they find themselves waking up underground, where Capelli’s wife, Susan, welcomes them. We also learn about Jack, Capelli’s son, and his recent illness.
Shortly after, you find yourself strolling through an underground shelter, encountering various inhabitants of Haven – a town established by Capelli. You notice parents comforting their children, while a dog perks up and wags its tail as you approach. Eventually, you link up with Lester, continue passing by people carrying on with their daily routines, and eventually come across Dale to acquire your Bullseye battle rifle. You then test it out at the shooting range, where other combatants are visible.
As events unfold, it’s evident that Capelli and his fellow residents aren’t preparing for a full-scale retaliation against the enemy. Instead, they are making plans to evacuate, which involves slipping past Hybrids who can be seen peering through shattered windows of the wrecked diner on top. The sound of their retreat echoes through the tunnels. However, when it appears they’ve gone undetected, a Hybrid breaks through a window, grabbing and attacking one of their allies. As a result, the fight erupts out in the desolate streets of Haven, with every strategy thrown out the window.
In contrast to the last two games, Resistance 3 is deliberately slow in its progression, offering a more immersive experience that focuses heavily on human elements. According to lead writer Jon Paquette, who spoke with GameDeveloper.com in 2011, it’s essential for players to understand their character, their location, the time period (if relevant), and above all, why they are performing the actions they are.
When it comes to firing at these extraterrestrials, I’d like a clear reason for doing so. It’s important that the act of shooting them feels rewarding, trust me, but if I understand why, then the overall experience will be significantly enhanced. I believe this is what makes great games truly exceptional.
Essentially, that’s just the beginning, as Capelli encounters Dr. Fyoder Malikov from the past game, who shares with him information about the Chimera and their intention to bring on a new ice age. This sets off their mission to thwart the enemy’s scheme and perhaps shift the advantage back towards humanity.
Previous installments of the game series primarily depicted Chimera’s influence from a military standpoint. In Resistance 2, there were horrific events such as the loss of tens of millions of human lives. A significant portion of the campaign involved exploring deserted urban landscapes, vast Chimera vessels, and colossal floating structures in the sky. In Resistance 3, the focus shifts to street-level combat, as this is no longer a mission; it’s a struggle for survival. The mood is more somber than ever, and it’s clear that humanity is on the brink of extinction.
As a gamer, I’m navigating through this apocalyptic world where the Chimera pose a major threat, but fellow humans can be just as lethal. The Remnants, my allies, are helping me escort Capelli and Malikov to New York – supposedly where the aliens have their doomsday device. However, there’s another group, the Wardens, ex-convicts turned ruthless bandits. Their leader, Mick, mercilessly slaughters Malikov and captures Capelli, using him as a pawn to fight off Chimera for their twisted entertainment. In the end, a prison breakout occurs, leading to Mick’s demise along with a trail of death and destruction.
In comparison to previous installments, this title presents a more raw and intimate portrayal of violence. This isn’t just different from its predecessors, but it breaks the mold for sci-fi shooter games. The narrative flow is skillfully managed, providing ample context for the world and its inhabitants, whether they are the Wardens or the residents of a coal town struggling to survive. When the action intensifies, it does so in engaging ways, blending gunfights with outright terror.
Insomniac Games deserves recognition for testing the boundaries of the PS3 hardware with their stunning environments, texture detail, and character designs. The game’s mood and ambiance are greatly enhanced by its lighting and shadow effects. Despite being released three years after Resistance 2, the visual improvement is still apparent and expertly achieved. Regrettably, the resolution and fluctuating frame rate detract significantly from the overall experience.
Of course, the gun play is snappy and responsive, regardless if you’re wielding the trusty Bullseye or the Magnum. The latter is particularly satisfying since it packs lithium rounds. Shoot an enemy in the head and then detonate it to watch a satisfying spray of bloody fireworks. The Mutator is also satisfying as it turns enemies into walking detonations, while environments feel more organic. It also doesn’t hurt that Resistance 3 brought back the first game’s weapon wheel, doing away with the two weapon-limit from the previous game.
In Resistance 3, unlike its predecessor, your character didn’t regenerate health but instead had a fixed health bar. This was because Capelli doesn’t share Hale’s regenerative abilities. This narrative choice added depth to his vulnerability and made the character more relatable when faced with various threats.
Reflecting on Resistance 3, it’s striking how similar it feels to numerous other post-apocalyptic games such as The Walking Dead, The Last of Us, and Metro. Despite this, the game maintains that distinctive grim atmosphere characteristic of the Resistance series. It’s puzzling then, that Insomniac’s title didn’t achieve the same level of success as its predecessors. For instance, Resistance 2 sold approximately 600,000 units in North America over two months, whereas Resistance 3 only managed to sell 180,000 copies in its first month.
As Insomniac Games focuses on the Ratchet and Clank series and Marvel’s Spider-Man, the Resistance franchise has taken a back seat. A potential remaster or remake of the trilogy could rekindle interest in the series, particularly Resistance 3. With its captivating mix of action, narrative, visuals, and rhythm, it remains a timeless gem even after more than a decade and numerous outstanding first-person shooters. It deserves greater recognition from both PlayStation enthusiasts and fans of the genre.
