I'm not sure why Microsoft waited this long to add this Windows 11 feature, but the option is finally on the way

What you need to know

  • Microsoft rolled out a pair of Windows 11 Insider builds recently.
  • Windows 11 Build 22635.4445 shipped to Insiders in the Beta Channel while Build 26120.2222 was released to Dev Channel Insiders.
  • The updates are relatively minor and include changes such as adding a new folder option within the context menu and the ability to launch a program as an admin through a new shortcut in a jump list in Start.

As a seasoned tech enthusiast with years of tinkering under my belt, I’ve grown accustomed to the ebb and flow of updates from tech giants like Microsoft. The recent rollout of Windows 11 Insider builds has piqued my interest, particularly since I’m a member of both the Beta and Dev Channels.

For Windows Insiders, there are some fresh features to test out as Microsoft has released two new builds recently. Those on the Beta Channel will be given an update to Build 22635.4445, while individuals within the Dev Channel will receive Build 26120.2222. These updates, being relatively minor, are discussed together in this combined summary post.

As an analyst, I’d rephrase it like this: In the Beta Channel, upon updating to the latest build, you’ll find a fresh folder option in your context menu after right-clicking a location in the navigation pane. For those on the Dev Channel, you’ll notice a new feature to launch an item with administrative privileges by simultaneously pressing Shift and CTRL keys while clicking that specific item within the Start menu jump list.

The new option for opening an item as admin is a small addition, but a welcome one. It’s a bit strange it took Microsoft this long to add the feature to Windows 11.

In the case of Insider builds, it’s usual to encounter known issues. However, Microsoft has flagged a specific problem found in Build 26120.2222 as both “novel” and “critical.

Microsoft has mentioned that there’s a problem with the current build which may cause the Narrator to fail upon launch if you’re using natural voices like Jenny. If you rely on Narrator, it would be wise to pause updates from the Settings under Windows Update > “Pause Updates”. In case you still decide to install this update and face the issue, changing to another voice, such as Microsoft David, within Settings > Accessibility > Narrator can help prevent crashes. Since the Narrator is malfunctioning, you’ll need an alternative screen reader or assistance from someone to make the necessary changes.

General

  • If you hold Shift and CTRL when clicking on a jump list item in Start menu or taskbar, this will now launch that item as admin, just like if you were to do Shift + CTRL and click the app icon itself. For example, if you right-click on Windows Terminal, and hold Shift and CTRL when you click PowerShell, it would open a PowerShell window as admin.
