As a cinephile who grew up with both Avatar: The Last Airbender and James Cameron’s Avatar franchise, I find myself torn between excitement for new adventures in Pandora and concern about the potential overlap of themes and motifs with Nickelodeon’s beloved fantasy series.
At D23 Brasil last week, we got our first glimpse at early concept art for “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” Fans are becoming more anxious as they notice striking resemblances to another Avatar series – “The Last Airbender.” The new images show five different views of Pandora, including never-before-seen flying creatures and Na’vi villages. However, following the presentation, fans are starting to worry that these movies might be borrowing too heavily from the elemental themes and symbols used in “The Last Airbender.
The movie Avatar introduced us to the forest-dwelling Na’vi, while The Way of Water showed us their coastal lifestyle as well. Concept art for Fire and Ash gave us a sneak peek at the “Ash People,” a darker reflection of the Na’vi according to director James Cameron. Their home appears to be situated in an ash-covered landscape, with barren stone formations and dragons-like creatures perched above. Cameron hinted at “new cultures, settings, landscapes, and more of Pandora,” but some viewers felt it resembled Aang’s exploration of the four great nations.

A significant portion of these comments were playful but sarcastic, as fans are still resentful that Cameron’s blockbuster series, titled “Avatar,” dethroned Nickelodeon’s fantasy franchise and garnered more attention. Any resemblance to other elements in the story is likely to provoke an eyeroll, and the experimental format seems a bit too familiar. The depiction of various Na’vi tribes residing in diverse environments with cultures centered around their natural surroundings evokes memories of the Fire Nation, Earth Kingdom, Water Tribes, and Air Nomads for fans.
It appears that the upcoming film “Fire and Ash” might introduce us to the avian-like Na’vi counterparts of the Air Nomads. From the concept art, we see colossal creatures gliding through the skies, seemingly propelled by both balloon-like extensions and wings. At this point, the storyline remains a mystery, leaving us uncertain about how these different tribes will intermingle. Fans are guessing what could cause Jake Sully and Neytiri to depart from the Metkayina clan once again. As “The Way of Water” demonstrated, the transition from forest to sea was a significant change for their family, and it seems this move might be uncommon among the Na’vi.
Excitedly speaking about it, I can’t help but share that the world of Avatar is brimming with excitement! After all, who wouldn’t be? The original creators, Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, are leading a new era at Avatar Studios under Nickelodeon. This division is set to produce animated series and films within the Avatar universe.
Following closely behind the scheduled premiere of “Avatar: Fire & Ash,” set for December 19, 2025, exclusively in cinemas, let’s hope fans can manage to remember all these storylines clearly.
