Overwatch: Classic Announced – Limited-Time Mode Coming to Overwatch 2 on November 12

As a gamer with over two decades of gaming experience under my belt, the news of Overwatch: Classic stirred a wave of nostalgia within me. I vividly remember the days when I first stepped into the world of Overwatch back in 2016, and the excitement it brought to the esports scene.

It was widely believed that Blizzard Entertainment might re-release the original Overwatch as a standalone game due to the hints and reminiscent elements. However, they are indeed bringing it back, but not as a separate game. Instead, Overwatch: Classic will be accessible within Overwatch 2 from November 12th until December 2nd, functioning as a limited-time event.

In a freshly released FAQ, the developer made it clear that Overwatch: Classic isn’t a standalone game. Instead, you can find it within the Events Hub and Arcade mode. The original 21 heroes will be playable in their classic forms, which means Mercy’s classic Resurrect ability and Bastion staying stationary while in turret mode are both part of the experience.

Initially, there won’t be any restrictions on who can play as a hero or what role they should fill. However, after the initial period, each player will only be able to use one hero. The game remains true to its original design by offering the four classic roles: Defense, Offense, Tank, and Support.

Indeed, it’s not an exact replica of the hero shooter that launched in 2016, but you will find the original set of 12 maps. Any updates or changes made to these maps will still be applicable. However, at this time, only default skins are available for characters, and features such as loot boxes, the original Competitive Mode, and other similar elements are not included in this version.

Blizzard has announced that the upcoming “Overwatch” event is the initial one, while future events might focus on trending strategies such as triple-tank/triple-support and the Moth meta post Mercy’s first update. We anticipate these additional events to launch in the forthcoming weeks. In the meantime, keep an eye out for further announcements regarding this.
