What you need to know
- Google’s Quick Share for Windows appears to be on the way to Windows on Arm PCs.
- Quick Share is a feature that allows you to share photos, videos, and files across Android and Windows devices.
- The website for Quick Share mentioned support for Windows on Arm briefly, though it has since been reverted to say Windows on Arm is not supported.
- It seems likely that Windows on Arm support is on the way but not ready at this time.
As a seasoned tech researcher with a penchant for uncovering hidden gems and deciphering the intricacies of software updates, I find myself intrigued by Google’s latest move regarding Quick Share on Windows on Arm PCs. It’s like playing a game of cat and mouse with Google, trying to catch a fleeting mention of support that quickly vanishes only to reappear again in the future.
On Arm-based Windows PCs, there’s exciting news coming up: Quick Share! This handy app lets you effortlessly transfer photos, videos, and files between Android devices and computers, but currently, it doesn’t play well with PCs running on Arm processors – a disappointment for those using top-tier AI PCs like the Snapdragon X Elite.
9to5Google noticed that a Google site briefly indicated support for Windows on Arm in relation to their Quick Share feature, but this mention has now been removed, returning the page to its original form.
It seems Google may have acted prematurely regarding their website updates. Earlier today, this is how their site looked according to the Wayback Machine archives:
To use Quick Share, make sure you have a Windows computer, either a desktop or laptop, that is running a 64-bit version of Windows 10 or later (or Windows 11 and up for devices based on ARM architecture). After downloading Quick Share, ensure your device’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections are active.
In contrast, here’s what the website says now:
Computers with the Windows operating system, which includes both desktops and laptops, should be running a 64-bit version of Windows 10 or later – ARM devices are not compatible. Please download Quick Share application and make sure that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are activated on your Windows device.
It seems unlikely that Google would introduce Windows on Arm support, only to withdraw it shortly after. More plausibly, they may have accidentally published the update to their website ahead of schedule, suggesting that Windows on Arm support will soon become available.
What is Quick Share?
As a researcher exploring the capabilities of various Android features, I’ve come across “Quick Share.” This handy tool enables me to effortlessly transfer photos, videos, and documents between Android devices that support it. Interestingly, it extends its reach to some Windows PCs too, provided you install the free Quick Share app on your computer.
Earlier this year, Google changed the name of its former feature known as Nearby Share to Quick Share. This renaming was part of a collaboration between Google and Samsung, aimed at developing a single, unified sharing solution.
It has been challenging to develop a universal file-sharing system that functions consistently across different Android device brands and Windows computers. Currently, there are several competing systems available, including Phone Link and Quick Share, although they share some similarities. Connecting an Android device with a PC doesn’t offer the same seamless experience as using Apple devices together, but solutions like Quick Share significantly minimize this gap.
