Seagate finally has competition for its 2TB Xbox Series X|S expansion card, and the pricing is (mostly) good news

What you need to know

  • WD_BLACK is finally introducing a 2TB Xbox Series X|S C50 expansion card.
  • Previously, the only way to get a 2TB storage expansion on Xbox Series X|S was to go for Seagate’s offering.
  • Right now, the WD_BLACK 2TB Xbox Series X|S expansion card SSD is $200 at SanDisk, or $260/$250 at Amazon and Best Buy, respectively.

As a longtime Xbox enthusiast with a library of games spanning decades, I can’t help but feel a wave of relief and excitement at the arrival of WD_BLACK’s 2TB expansion card for the Xbox Series X|S. For far too long, we’ve been limited to one option for our storage needs, and it’s not that I have anything against Seagate, but variety is the spice of life, as they say!

At long last, we’ve found an additional storage solution for individuals requiring substantial space for their Xbox consoles.

The 2TB model of the WD_BLACK C50 expansion card for Xbox Series X|S is now accessible, providing an eagerly anticipated option to Seagate’s 2TB card. This card is being offered at $260 and $250 on Amazon and Best Buy respectively, but at this moment, it can be purchased directly from SanDisk for only $200, matching the price of the current sale on the 2TB Seagate card. Moreover, acquiring the WD_BLACK card comes with a free month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, though this offer is only eligible for new subscribers.

At the launch of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in November 2020, Seagate had a 1TB expansion card available, while WD_BLACK’s products were introduced at a later date, debuting in the year 2023.

With more and more games on the horizon, storage remains crucial

The Xbox Series X|S gaming consoles utilize unique storage systems to maintain consistent speeds, which means players can only expand their storage using Seagate and WD_BLACK expansion cards.

The prices have dropped substantially since the initial launch of each card, with Seagate’s 2TB card once costing around $400 during a rather challenging phase. However, there’s still potential for even lower costs. Fingers crossed that the introduction of these new WD_BLACK cards will push prices down a bit more.

2025 promises a wealth of significant games for Xbox players, which underscores the growing importance of expanded console storage as we move through each month. Titles like Obsidian Entertainment’s Avowed, id Software’s DOOM: The Dark Ages, and Playground Games’ Fable, along with numerous others, are being developed, and these are just the games from their in-house studios.
