Peacemaker: DC’s James Gunn Clarifies the New DCU Timeline

As a die-hard fan of the DC Universe, I must say that James Gunn has outdone himself yet again! With his impeccable storytelling and knack for creating compelling characters, he’s crafting a new era of DC entertainment that is nothing short of exhilarating.

James Gunn is addressing the confusion among fans regarding the new DC Universe, as they noticed a small inconsistency between the series Creature Commandos and Peacemaker. In anticipation of the final episode of The Penguin, Max on Sunday unveiled a preview showcasing upcoming Max and HBO shows scheduled for 2025 release, including season 2 of the DC Studios series Peacemaker. This sneak peek provided a glimpse at Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., father of Joel Kinnaman’s Suicide Squad character Rick Flag Jr. Interestingly, Rick Flag Sr.’s first appearance will be in the adult animated series Creature Commandos, followed by his live-action debut in the Superman film written and directed by Gunn.

In his post on Threads, Gunn has arranged the upcoming projects, with “Creature Commandos” season 1 set to debut first on December 5th on Max, followed by “Superman” hitting theaters on July 11, 2025, and finally “Peacemaker” season 2, scheduled for a later release in 2025 also on Max.

2023 saw the DC Studios co-chief reveal that actors portraying characters in the DC Universe would appear in both animation and live-action. First up, Rick Flag Sr., played by Grillo, will transition from animated roles in series like Superman and Peacemaker. Gunn, previously, praised this character linking all three projects as “a really cool character that Frank has been shaping.” He added, “The character’s also present in Superman, and he’s a vital element in Peacemaker.

In the second season of “Peacemaker,” this character takes center stage, allowing viewers to explore various aspects of his personality. Gunn commented that he’s not a one-dimensional character, as he isn’t purely good or evil. Instead, we delve into the multifaceted nature of his character, revealing him to be a morally complex individual. Grillo, an actor I’ve known for some time now and have long wanted to collaborate with, plays this role. When I took over the studio, he was one of the first people I spoke to about finding an interesting project for him. Now, it seems like he’s everywhere in the show.

Stepping into my role as a movie aficionado, I’d like to address the question of continuity in the new DC Universe (DCU). James Gunn has reassured fans that this fresh canon won’t leave you scratching your head in confusion. Although “Creature Commandos” serves as the inaugural series within the new universe, it’s the upcoming “Superman” project that truly kicks off the DCU.

In simpler terms, Gunn stated at New York Comic Con that when we talk about events from the past in the DC Universe, these events are considered official or valid (i.e., they become part of the canon).

Created and penned by Gunn, the seven-episode animated series titled Creature Commandos revolves around a clandestine squad of imprisoned monsters chosen for tasks that are too risky for human execution. In this production, Sean Glover voices Flag Sr., while Zoe Chao from The Afterparty, David Harbour from the upcoming Thunderbolts, Indira Varma from Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Alan Tudyk from Moana 2, and Sean Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 contribute their voices to characters such as Nina Mazursky, Frankenstein, The Bride, Dr. Phosphorus, and Weasel and GI Robot respectively.
