As a long-time devotee of the captivating world of Yellowstone and an avid admirer of Kevin Costner‘s illustrious career spanning four decades, I find myself both intrigued and saddened by his recent comments regarding the demise of John Dutton III.
Warning: This story contains major spoilers for season five of Yellowstone.
Kevin Costner is weighing in on the fate of his Yellowstone character.
The actor who portrayed John Dutton III for more than four years in the Paramount drama, following his Oscar win, expressed his views about the contentious demise of his character, which was unveiled during the series’ episode on November 10th.
Despite leaving the show due to scheduling issues following the airing of the final episode of season five’s first part in January 2023, Costner seemed taken aback by the unexpectedly sad twist in his character’s storyline.
He admitted he was completely truthful. He hadn’t realized it had aired the previous night,” he said on November 11th, during SiriusXM’s The Michael Smerconish Program. “In all honesty, I swear to god, I’ve been seeing ads with my face everywhere and thinking ‘I’m not in that one.’ But it didn’t click for me until yesterday that it was the event.
Apparently, the 69-year-old individual, who proposed “two potential conclusions” for John Dutton to the series creator Taylor Sheridan at the early stages of the show, appears reluctant to witness his character’s demise unfold on the screen.
“I heard it’s a suicide,” he continued, “so that doesn’t make me want to rush to go see it.”
To begin with, it was initially believed that John Dutton took his own life at the start of season five’s opening episode. However, by the episode’s conclusion, it was revealed that Sarah Atwood, the girlfriend of John’s estranged son Jamie, had actually paid someone to assassinate him. (Dawn Olivieri portrayed Sarah Atwood, and Wes Bentley played Jamie.)
Despite online fans’ protests about how his character was handled, Costner, who was attending a screening of “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter Two” (a two-part film project that Costner has been dedicating his time to since leaving Yellowstone), remains confident in Taylor and the team.
He also mentioned that they are quite intelligent individuals. It’s possible there’s a false lead here, but who can tell? They’re certainly skilled, and they will likely unravel the mystery.
