As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the early access release of Brighter Shores, a new RuneScape-like game crafted by one of its original creators. If you’re familiar with the magical world of medieval clicky games like me, you might find it intriguing that this game bears an uncanny resemblance to the beloved RuneScape. After all, it’s no surprise given the creator’s background!
Even though the game’s basic combat mechanics aren’t fully revealed just yet, they could potentially puzzle beginners. In this tutorial, we’ll share some valuable insights to help you maneuver through the game’s combat system!
Ultimate Combat Guide
In the spirit of the classic game it’s modeled after, I engage in a back-and-forth battle system. Essentially, my foe and I trade blows in turns. It’s as straightforward as you can imagine, and for now, this simple mechanic will remain the norm while they add more complexity to it during the early access phase.
Currently, the combat primarily revolves around pointing, clicking, and waiting for actions to complete, similar to some game mechanics in RuneScape. However, it could develop into a more intricate system involving various types of damage or attack strategies later on, but for now, consuming a potion for additional health is also occasionally necessary.
After every battle, your health will completely recover. Therefore, consider saving your healing resources until they’re truly needed, especially during battles where victory is imminent.
Scaling Difficulty – Fighting Weaker Mobs
As you progress with your training, remember that the difficulty of enemies adjusts to your proficiency level. For instance, the crows at Old Street East in Hopeport serve as one of the earliest demonstrations of this. Initially, they are merely level 2 adversaries, making them an effortless target for some early equipment and advancement.
As time goes by, these creatures will metamorphose into Level 16 Deathcrows, cranking up the difficulty a notch or two. I’m still figuring out if this changes their loot drops, but one thing is certain – they’ve become significantly tougher than before.
As a fellow enthusiast, I wanted to share a tip that might have slipped past some players: You actually have the ability to revert each mob to its earlier form! Simply right-click on the mob and select “Past action” if it’s an option available. This gives you the chance to pick different versions of the mob in question, such as battling a Level 2 Deathcrow instead of the Level 16 one. Hope this helps!
How Mobs Spawns Work
If you haven’t realized this yet, let me clarify that each resource node operates independently. This means you can still collect resources even if other players have interacted with it recently. Conversely, it is important to note that the same rule does not hold true for mobs.
While engaged in battle, you’re unable to assist other players. This rule also applies to sharing mob (monster) encounters with others. As enemies need some time to reappear following their demise, crowded regions frequently lead to a competition among players, as they rush to strike the monsters first.
As a gamer, I always keep an eye out for alternative training spots when it comes to honing my combat skills. If the area I’m in is crowded and folks are tagging mobs with their ranged weapons or accidentally pulling aggro just by passing by, I like to pick up my things and relocate somewhere less busy. This way, I can train without the added frustration.
Escaping an Encounter
As a passionate gamer, I’ve discovered an essential tactic that might not be immediately obvious to some players, given the number of queries I’ve seen on this topic. It turns out you can strategically avoid getting involved in a fight by casting the Immunity spell during battle.
The small red button located beneath the health meters at the screen’s top is what you need to press when you want your character to cast a spell. Pressing this button initiates the casting process, which can take several seconds to complete. Be careful not to use it too late, or else you could find yourself in a precarious situation, potentially losing your character during the spell’s execution.
In addition to this, you could also use the spell menu to grant yourself Immunity outside of combat. This means you’d be able to traverse a zone filled with aggressive mobs without being unexpectedly attacked, thereby avoiding being forced into a combat situation.
Different Damage Types & Resistances
You may have observed various icons that occasionally appear next to your damage figures. These icons signify distinct types of damage, and here’s a rundown of all the current ones in the game:
- Physical
- Necrotic
- Arborae
- Cryonae
- Tempestae
- Infernae
Clicking on an adversary’s portrait reveals the kind of damage they inflict. Usually, they are resistant to the same kind of damage, but weakened against a different one.
This is hardly going to be an issue early on, but pay close attention to these as you start to loot weapons that have a chance to deal elemental damage. The last thing you would want is to fight something and not be able to deal any damage!
Acquiring New Professions
As you advance through each chapter, you’ll discover fresh “combat techniques,” but you won’t be able to revert back to the previous one unless you go back to its originating region. For instance, in the initial area, you begin as a “Guard,” and subsequently, you’ll learn to build up your skills from scratch to become a “Scout” in the next location.
In your upcoming journey, you’ll notice a change where your former “Guard” equipment will no longer serve its purpose. Instead, you’ll need to acquire and utilize “Scout” items. However, you can still use your old gear in the previous area. Remember this as you progress through the next stage of the game, as some players might be surprised by this change in mechanism.
In the game Brighter Shares, your progress won’t be erased like it would in some other games, such as RuneScape. To clarify further, instead of increasing your attack level, you’ll be improving your strength. However, unlike how increasing your attack level results in larger damage numbers, enhancing your strength won’t have that effect here. This mechanic can be controversial, but it’s simply the way things operate in Brighter Shores.
In the future, this could develop into a complex scenario where multiple job levels are needed as the story connects various professions in later stages. For now, you’ll find yourself frequently switching between weapons and armor sets whenever you move between distinct areas within the game.
At present, you’ll find that the different fighting styles are quite similar in their fundamental aspects. Be on the lookout for upcoming updates, as there may be unique special attacks planned for each style, though these are yet to be added and have designated spaces reserved for them instead.
Here’s everything you should know about combat in the game at present. However, please keep in mind that Brighter Shores is currently in its early stages of development. With all the feedback they have been receiving, there are likely to be numerous reworks or refinements as time passes.
