Game of Thrones Author Teases New Project with Maisie Williams

As a die-hard fan of George R.R. Martin’s epic saga, I can’t help but feel both elated and apprehensive at the news of his recent meeting with Maisie Williams. The prospect of a potential sequel series featuring Arya Stark has sent waves of excitement through the fandom, yet the thought of further delays in the completion of ‘The Winds of Winter’ and ‘A Dream of Spring’ leaves me with a sense of trepidation.

Over the weekend, George R.R. Martin resumed his delayed travel diary, and in it, he discussed a meeting with “Game of Thrones” actress Maisie Williams that has fans buzzing. The writer has been chronicling his summer travels and experiences through a series of blog posts for several months now, and on Sunday, he reached the part about his stay in London in early August. He hinted at a reunion with Williams, suggesting it wasn’t just a casual visit.

In simpler terms, Martin shared on social media that he had dinner with Maisie Williams (who played Arya Stark in Game of Thrones) and hinted at an exciting conversation without revealing details to avoid jinxing it. The internet is buzzing about this, with fans guessing they might have talked about a potential sequel series for Arya’s character. However, some fans are not thrilled about this idea, as they prefer Martin to focus on completing his book series, A Song of Ice and Fire.

Caution: Game of Thrones plot point ahead – Let me remind you that following Bran’s coronation as King of Westeros, Arya embarked on a sea voyage westward towards the Sunset Sea, seeking new adventures and explorations. This ending resonated with a brief exchange Arya had with Lady Crane, her acquaintance from Braavos, but left some viewers feeling that it didn’t quite fit Arya’s character development. The storyline could seem even more unsuitable in the books, as Arya has never shown an inclination for sailing west and the book counterpart to Lady Crane, known as Lady Stork, is significantly different.

As a fervent fan, I share the same curiosity as many others about the unknown beyond Westeros’ western border. While the characters in George R.R. Martin’s epic may ponder what lies there, we fans tend to believe it’s vast expanses of open sea stretching eastward towards lands like Asshai and Yi Ti. Martin seems to support this theory through his 2018 historical work Fire & Blood, which features the tale of explorer Elissa Farman who set sail westward in pursuit of adventure. A generation later, her ship was said to have been sighted in Asshai’s port.

Fans have been divided in their responses to potential Game of Thrones spinoffs, as George R.R. Martin has revealed that his focus on projects like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is causing delays in completing The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. Instead of new screen adaptations, many fans would prefer to see Martin finish writing his books first, as they believe the book’s ending will be significantly different from the TV show, with more depth and clarity provided by Martin’s writing style.

Of course, this is all speculation so far, as Martin didn’t tell us anything concrete about his meeting with Williams. The author is still working on the final two novels in A Song of Ice and Fire, and on various screen adaptations as well. The Hedge Knight is expected to premiere next year on HBO, while House of the Dragon Season 3 will be out in 2026. Martin’s books are available now in print, digital and audio formats.
