PS5 Pro’s PSSR Surpasses FSR and TSR At Lower Resolutions, Closer to DLSS3 – Albatroz Port Dev

As a seasoned gamer with decades of pixel-pushing under my belt, I must say that the PS5 Pro has certainly piqued my interest. Coming from someone who’s seen a fair share of console generations, I can confidently say that the PS5 Pro is shaping up to be a formidable contender.

In the brief period since its launch, the PS5 Pro has garnered relatively good reviews (considering the initial response following its unveiling). Despite its $699.99 price tag, feedback on its performance and enhancements across several PlayStation 5 games has been generally favorable. While much attention has been paid to big-name releases, the potential of the console for porting projects, such as Kyoday’s upcoming one, is intriguing.

Kyodox is tasked with adapting Among Giants’ console version of the backpacking RPG, Albatroz, which was originally designed for PC. Although it didn’t utilize PSSR for this project, they plan to employ the technology in their forthcoming endeavor. In an interview with GamingBolt, co-founder and co-CEO Ivaylo Koralsky mentioned that due to time limitations, Albatroz was not created using PSSR, but it runs at a high resolution on the PS5 Pro without it.

In our next venture featuring an anticipated PS5 Pro upgrade, we’re incorporating PSSR technology together with ray-traced global illumination, reflections, and ambient occlusion. Our aim is to maintain a smooth 60FPS performance in one of the quality settings. Compared to FSR and TSR, PSSR’s advanced upscaling delivers superior results at lower resolutions, allowing us to implement contemporary techniques for reflections, lighting, and shadows.

The advanced PS5 Pro model offers additional visual refinements as well. In his comparison, Koralsky noted that PSSR (PlayStation Super Resolution) performs comparably to Nvidia’s DLSS 3. Some of these improvements include Virtual Shadow Maps for dramatically better shadow quality, a feature not found on the standard PS5. To put it in perspective, PSSR is more akin to DLSS3 than FSR2. The use of PSSR also results in enhanced movement and color shifts in foliage. Given that it’s an AI-based upscaler, the capabilities of PSSR are expected to expand further, potentially playing a crucial role in the future PS6 platform.

In the near future, we might catch a glimpse of what developers will achieve with the PS5 Pro in upcoming blockbuster games. Until then, feel free to explore our detailed analysis about the console and decide if it’s a good investment for you.
