As a long-time Marvel fan and a connoisseur of superhero movies, I must say that Chris Evans’ portrayal of Captain America has been nothing short of breathtaking. The character’s journey from Steve Rogers, the scrawny kid from Brooklyn, to the symbol of hope for humanity, has been nothing short of inspiring.
For quite some time, Chris Evans has played a crucial role in Marvel films. Although he played Johnny Storm twice and had a humorous guest appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine, it’s his characterization of Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that truly catapulted him to stardom. And rightfully so, given Cap was intended to be one of the main characters in the MCU. It’s likely this wouldn’t have happened if Evans hadn’t delivered such a flawless and captivating performance.
From Captain America: The First Avenger to Avengers: Endgame, Evans’ take on the character was always a highlight. And, while his exit from the cinematic universe felt organic and earned, the larger franchise hasn’t felt the same without him ever since – an issue addressed in the upcoming film Captain America: Brave New World. But, for those who do very much miss Evans and his Cap, there are plenty of movies and standout scenes within them that are worth revisiting. Not to mention, there’s always Evans’ other movies to binge, including his upcoming big-screen team-up with Dwayne Johnson in Red One.
10. “If You Want a Job Done Right…” in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
In Joe Johnston’s movie, Captain America: The First Avenger, several sequences stand out as memorable moments for Chris Evans in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These include his transformation from a skinny boy to a muscular hero, his losing Bucky Barnes, and the scenes that showcase his bravery.
In essence, Steve Rogers’ actions are all equally memorable. His bold statement “I can keep doing this forever” towards some merciless bullies remains legendary. His act of leaping onto what he believes is a live grenade in order to protect his comrades is as touching as tenderness itself. However, it’s his selfless decision to venture behind enemy lines and rescue the POWs, who were seemingly considered hopeless by his superiors, that stands out the most. For Steve Rogers, the cause is never lost, the soldiers are never doomed, and his struggle is only just beginning. He possesses a unique physical prowess, and he intends to employ it for the greater good.
9. Losing a Bet in The Avengers (2012)
In the initial scene of the 2012 blockbuster film The Avengers, Nick Fury proposes a $10 wager to Captain America. This bet is that Fury will reveal something so astonishing to Captain America, who lived during World War II and was later frozen for decades, that it would even shock him. True to form, the audience, having grown accustomed to grand spectacles and parting with their $10, also find themselves in awe after witnessing the massive S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier.
In this action-packed movie, brimming with witty humor, such as a standout joke about Galaga, it’s a quiet scene that takes the spotlight. The challenge for The Avengers was formidable. Although most of its characters were already established, it needed to demonstrate how they would interact with each other. Scenes like Captain America settling a debt played a crucial role in achieving this goal.
8. Loki’s Impression in Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Most of Evans’ portrayals as Captain America led the movie or played a significant role in an ensemble. However, there were some exceptions to this rule. One such example was the film “Thor: The Dark World“.
Following the release of The Avengers, fans began speculating when characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) would make appearances in each other’s standalone films, and how these crossovers might unfold. While Iron Man 3 missed this chance, another MCU film from 2013 did not. Interestingly, the way it happened was through humor: Loki transforming into Captain America for a short while demonstrated his knowledge of Cap and allowed him to make fun of him; at the same time, it provided Chris Evans an opportunity to play around with his own character.
7. “This isn’t Freedom, This is Fear” in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Many people share Evans’ preference for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” and it’s easy to understand why. The film is tautly structured, expertly written, and unveiled one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most impressive villains (though his status wouldn’t remain unchanged for long). Despite the thrilling action scenes being among the MCU’s finest and Robert Redford’s presence being significant, it’s the subtle political commentary that elevates it to a superior tier.
Initially, the new Helicarrier fleet from S.H.I.E.L.D. left Rogers in awe. However, what he once viewed as impressive, now represents oppression to him. The idea that these vehicles were intended to safeguard freedom by Fury and other S.H.I.E.L.D. members, Captain America sees them as tools to instill widespread fear instead. Captain America was always about the people.
6. Chopping Wood in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Amongst the four Avengers movies out so far, Avengers: Age of Ultron may not be the most impactful, but it does contain some significant scenes. Despite being somewhat unfairly criticized, certain seemingly minor instances in this film had profound effects later on. For example, the strained conversation between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark that took place at their temporary refuge – which happened to be Clint Barton’s home.
As they split logs together, they ponder the implications of Stark creating an AI weapon disguised as a protector, despite its lethal capabilities. Growing tired of their chat, Rogers abandons axe-swinging and splits a log effortlessly, hinting that soon, his genuine clash with Stark is imminent. This act displays both humor in its demonstration of strength and foreshadowing of their upcoming disagreements.
5. Cap v. Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War (2016)
In a different category from both a standalone “Captain America” film and an “Avengers” movie, “Captain America: Civil War” is one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s unique productions. It’s also one of the most significant installments in the series. The creation of Ultron by Tony Stark may have led to a split among Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but it was the disagreement between Captain America and Iron Man that became the main focus.
The significance of this was underscored when it came to the character of the Winter Soldier. Upon discovering that it was indeed the mind-controlled assassin who had killed his parents, Stark’s conflict took on a deeply personal dimension. Similarly, acknowledging the brainwashing aspect and wishing to protect his friend, the fight became personal for Steve Rogers too. The climactic one-on-one (or two-on-one, considering the Winter Soldier) fight in the third act is one of the most intense sequences of minutes in the MCU, a rare instance where it seems an MCU hero is genuinely trying to eliminate their adversary.
4. The PSAs in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
In the same way that Captain America had a significant yet brief appearance in Thor: The Dark World, he also has a cameo in Spider-Man: Homecoming. However, much like his role in Thor’s second movie, this cameo is quite impactful and Chris Evans delivers it effectively. The cameo is presented as several public service announcements, with Captain America donning his classic outfit reminiscent of Captain America: The First Avenger.
The amusing part of the scene lies in the irony that Peter Parker is watching health-related public service announcements shortly after his initial encounter with Captain America. Given that Captain America, symbolizing truth, justice, and American values, is now often perceived as a war criminal by many, which Hannibal Buress’ character Coach Wilson humorously highlights with sharp deadpan wit.
3. “I Am Steve Rogers” in Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Among the four Avengers films, only one, namely Avengers: Infinity War, features Captain America taking a more backseat role. However, he still manages to steal some limelight with a few significant scenes. The first of these stands out because of its context. Wanda Maximoff is protecting Vision from Corvus Glaive and Proxima Midnight in a subway station. Just as the sound of an oncoming train becomes prominent, it’s not the train that catches our eye. Instead, it’s the unseen figure who suddenly appears behind the train that grabs attention.
It’s a great intro, but there’s a scene later in the movie that gives it a run for its memorability money. Specifically, on Wakanda, Cap is introduced to some of the Guardians of the Galaxy. This includes Groot who, true to form, says “I am Groot.” Not understanding that this is just about the only thing Groot can say, Cap puts his hand to his chest and politely reciprocates with “I am Steve Rogers.”
2. On Your Left in Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Occasionally, a callback can feel somewhat cliche. However, Sam Wilson’s “On your left” line towards Cap in Avengers: Endgame was more than just a callback; it stirred feelings of immense joy and excitement. This line echoed back to an earlier instance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where it established a profound bond between Wilson and Rogers, brothers who hailed from different eras and realms.
At the conclusion of Avengers: Infinity War, Captain America lost his brother, much like everyone else in the universe who mourned the loss of their loved ones. Therefore, when Cap hears Falcon’s voice through his earpiece, it signifies that the universal catastrophe has ended, and those who perished have been brought back to life. Additionally, as we’ve witnessed, Falcon is not the only character coming out of the swirling portals to join Captain America in what seemed like his last fight.
“…Assemble.” in Avengers: Endgame (2019)
In the end, it required four films, but eventually Chris Evans’ Captain America delivered his most famous catchphrase. This moment had been eagerly anticipated by fans, and the grand pre-battle scene in Avengers: Endgame did not fall short of expectations. The sight of all the heroes standing alongside him, prepared for battle, was a spectacle that IMAX screens were tailor-made to showcase, especially compared to large action sequences.
He’s already gone through two and a half hours of fighting with Thanos, his minions, even a past version of himself. So, naturally, Rogers’ is pretty exasperated and exhausted. Yet, through tired huffs, he manages to get the whole group ready to fight, win or lose, live or die (for some, die again), with just two words. They didn’t need to be yelled out; they just needed to be uttered the right way.
On Disney+, you have the ability to watch every instance where Chris Evans portrays Captain America. The film titled “Captain America: Brave New World” has been scheduled for a theatrical release on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2025.
