As a movie buff with over three decades of film-viewing under my belt, I must admit that the prospect of a new “Cars” installment, or “Cars 4,” has me both intrigued and skeptical. On one hand, the first three films have been part of my family’s movie nights for years, and the charming world of Radiator Springs has brought countless hours of joy to millions of viewers worldwide. However, the declining box office performance of the sequels compared to the original does raise questions about whether another film is truly warranted or if it’s just a cash grab on the coattails of nostalgia.
It appears that D23 Brazil may have inadvertently revealed plans for the next installment of the “Cars” franchise, titled “Cars 4”. This was suggested by a leaked survey given to attendees, which hinted at the upcoming movie. However, there’s debate over whether there is genuine audience interest or if this is merely capitalizing on nostalgia for financial gain. The first three “Cars” movies collectively earned $1.4 billion at the box office.
Jay Ward, the creative director at Pixar’s Cars, spoke about how the release of DVDs propelled the movie to unprecedented heights with no signs of slowing down. “It grew far beyond what we ever anticipated,” he shared during the 2023 Porsche Rennsport Reunion Event. “Every day, a new child discovers it, which was not part of our plan. The surprising aspect was that Cars debuted in 2006, when DVDs were quite common. It was popular initially in theaters, but its popularity only increased.
Contrasting with the initial “Cars” and its sequel, the third film generated considerably lower earnings. This decrease might be due to several factors, such as the extended periods of time taken for development. Unlike the five-year gap between the first two films, there were six years between the release of “Cars 2” and “Cars 3.
From 2006 onwards, Disney/Pixar has earned far more money from merchandise based on the Cars series than they’ve made from ticket sales. Within just five years, these items generated over $10 billion in revenue, making it the second most financially successful franchise, surpassed only by Star Wars. Lately, a leak disclosed that a video game collaboration between the Cars series and Fortnite is underway.
Starting in early 2025, several fresh attractions themed around cars will commence construction at Magic Kingdom, as revealed at this year’s D23 event. It’s not the first time that Disney parks have featured Cars-themed attractions; Disneyland is home to a bustling Radiator Springs district, and in Disneyland Paris, visitors can enjoy a cruise down Route 66. This upcoming ride offers a fresh take on things, but with a new Cars movie set to debut alongside it, there’s a good chance we’ll see renewed enthusiasm for all things Cars.
What Would Cars 4 Even Be About?
In “Cars 3,” the story revolved around Lightning McQueen’s supposed farewell performance. He prepared with Cruz Ramirez, a character voiced by Cristela Alonzo, at the Rust-eze Racing Center. Prior to her own racing career, Cruz had been training the upcoming racers. With McQueen’s motivation, she took his place in the Florida 500, a major comeback race for him. The forthcoming film may delve into Cruz’s racing journey with McQueen as her team manager. Under his guidance, she clinched championship titles in 2017, 2018, and 2021.
