Amazon Shutting Down Freevee Streaming Service (But There’s Good News)

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for binge-watching my favorite shows on streaming platforms, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions about Amazon’s decision to phase out Freevee and integrate its content into Prime Video. On one hand, I’m thrilled that the once-beloved Freevee content is now accessible to non-Prime customers without any subscription fees – a win for us frugal viewers!

Amazon’s free, ad-supported streaming service Freevee is coming to an end, but there’s a silver lining for its enthusiasts. As reported by Deadline, instead of closing down completely, Amazon is moving the Freevee content over to Prime Video. This means that popular shows like Judy Justice, Neighbours, Tribunal Justice, America’s Test Kitchen: The Next Generation, Bosch: Legacy, and many others will still be accessible to non-Prime members. In addition, older originals such as Jury Duty, High School, Hollywood Houselift with Jeff Lewis, and Primo will also remain available.

For regions where Freevee is accessible (which includes the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Austria), content marked as Freevee will now be labeled “Watch for Free” for non-Prime members. This implies that you no longer need an Amazon Prime membership to access this content. Furthermore, popular titles like The Summer I Turned Pretty, The Boys, and Fallout are expected to remain accessible without the Prime Video paywall for customers as well. According to an Amazon representative, the transition of Freevee is primarily a rebranding effort.

The representative announced that we’ve made Prime Video a go-to spot for entertainment, allowing customers to tailor their viewing experience with a wide range of offerings. This includes exclusive content produced by Amazon MGM Studios for Prime members, licensed movies and series, additional content from other services, live sports, blockbuster films, and the option to rent or buy popular titles. To make things easier for our viewers, we’re planning to remove the Freevee branding, but rest assured, there will be no changes to the content available for Prime members. In fact, a vast selection of free streaming content will continue to be accessible for non-Prime members, featuring select Originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a broad library of FAST Channels – all conveniently located on Prime Video.

Initially debuting as IMDb Freedive in January 2019, Freevee underwent several transformations, becoming IMDbTV in June and then Amazon Freevee in April 2022. Despite earlier rumors suggesting its closure and shift towards Prime Video, these reports were dismissed by Amazon. It’s also been reported that no job losses are expected as part of this transition. Previously, the content team of Freevee had merged with Amazon MGM Studios, while their business operations were already aligned with Prime Video.
