New Star Wars Rumor Reveals Lucasfilm’s Future Movies Hinge on Rey

As a dedicated Star Wars fan who has followed the franchise since its inception, I am thrilled to hear that Rey will continue to be a part of future movies. Daisy Ridley’s portrayal of Rey has been nothing short of phenomenal, and her character’s journey from an orphaned scavenger to a Jedi Knight resonates deeply with me.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it appears that Rey will play a significant role in upcoming Star Wars films currently being planned by Lucasfilm. It seems that they are determined to reintroduce this character in multiple movies, including the “New Jedi Order” film unveiled at Star Wars Celebration 2023 and the new trilogy from writer/producer Simon Kinberg.

As a dedicated fan, I’m convinced that Rey is currently Star Wars’ most invaluable on-screen treasure, perhaps the only one they possess at this moment. It’s crucial for Lucasfilm to ponder over their future plans – whether they will extend the Skywalker Saga (which ended with 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) or delve into standalone franchise films instead.

Daisy Ridley played the role of Rey in each of the three movies that make up the sequel trilogy of Star Wars’ Skywalker Saga, first appearing in 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” These films depict Rey’s journey from a scavenger living in the desert to becoming a Jedi Knight. Along this path, she uncovers her link to the Force and learns from iconic characters such as Luke Skywalker. Despite the sequel trilogy’s storyline causing much debate (particularly regarding Rey’s family connections to Emperor Palpatine), fans have admired the character largely due to Daisy Ridley’s heartfelt portrayal.

It’s been anticipated for some time that Rey will make a comeback on the silver screen. The upcoming New Jedi Order movie, slated for release 15 years after “The Rise of Skywalker” and focusing on Rey mentoring a new group of Force-wielding individuals, was one of three cinematic projects announced by Lucasfilm at Star Wars Celebration London last year. However, the production process has faced some bumps. Recently, in October, Steven Knight stepped down as the movie’s writer, joining a list of others who have left the project. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy continues to be associated with the film as its director.

Lucasfilm finds itself at a critical juncture concerning future Star Wars films. While several projects have been unveiled following the release of “Rise of Skywalker”, only Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian & Grogu” has materialized so far, with production completed well in advance of its 2026 release date. This film is expected to be successful upon release, but the future beyond it remains uncertain. In an effort to stir anticipation for the next phase of Star Wars films, developing a series centered around Rey appears to be a sensible strategy. Given her familiarity among audiences and the box office success of all three sequel trilogy movies surpassing $1 billion, this could potentially generate excitement. Disney aims to focus on quality rather than quantity for their major properties, as the next Star Wars film needs to feel like a significant event. Stirring fan interest in Rey’s future could help achieve that goal.

The polarizing responses to the sequel trilogy would theoretically be reason for Lucasfilm to leave the Skywalker Saga and its related characters behind and move forward with an entirely new story, but that isn’t guaranteed to work either. What’s more, Ridley has encountered fans who are interested in seeing her return, suggesting that time may have healed some of the wounds of Rise of Skywalker (similar to how the prequels are now viewed more favorably). With the studio struggling to get some momentum going on movie side, it sounds like Rey might be their best hope for a fruitful future.
