As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent navigating the Underworld in Hades and its sequel, I can confidently say that the return of Athena in Hades 2 is a welcome addition to my journey as Melinoë. The original game’s first ally has always been a favorite among players for her powerful defensive abilities, and her absence in the initial release of Hades 2 was sorely felt by many, including myself.
In the upcoming game, Hades 2, players will keep an eye out for Athena, a fresh ally and Boon provider, who reappears in the Olympic Update.
Initially, the primary character Zagreus came across Athena as his first divine companion in what we know as Hades. Her robust defensive skills made her a beloved choice for players throughout their gaming experience.
In the release of the early access for Hades 2, she conspicuously missed being present. For a significant period, the game lacked the protective boons from Athena that the new protagonist, Melinoë, and Zagreus’ younger sister, usually benefited from.
I’m back, baby! A fresh armor adorns me, and I’ve got some sweet new powers to help boost Melinoë. Get ready for the win!
How to find Athena in Hades 2?
In Hades 2, Athena will only appear when battling through the surface.
In simpler terms, players must journey through the Underworld, gradually advancing, until they manage to unveil the Cauldron enchantment that lifts restrictions on the surface passage, and collect the necessary ingredients to perform this spell.
As a gamer immersed in this world, I’d have to level up sufficiently to learn the spell that lets Melinoë endure the surface without succumbing to the curse of the Cthonic deities.
After completing those required tasks, I, as a gamer, would then advance into the third area that was unveiled with the latest Olympus update – specifically, the main setting and abode of the divine beings, which goes by the same name.
In the mythical realm of Olympus, Athena could suddenly manifest during a Divine Intervention, causing her to descend forcefully, annihilating adversaries and concluding the skirmish. Following this, she offers Melinoë a choice among six special gifts or boons.
Following this initial interaction, the player may come across Athena at random during ground-level adventures. By presenting her with Nectar prior to any conversation, they can receive Boons from her. This action will reward them with the Gorgon Amulet keepsake and further develop Melinoë’s connection with Athena.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but marvel at the enchanting allure of the Gorgon Amulet – a symbol deeply rooted in Greek mythology that recalls Athena’s pivotal role in assisting Perseus during his epic battle against Medusa. In this timeless tale, Athena’s impenetrable shield played a crucial part in granting Perseus the advantage to vanquish the fearsome gorgon, Medusa. By employing the mirrored surface of Athena’s shield, Perseus skillfully outmaneuvered Medusa’s petrifying visage, ensuring victory for the hero and preserving the world from her deadly gaze.
If Melinoë is used to activate the trinket, Athena might manifest when the player lacks any remaining Death’s Defiance abilities. The boon that appears depends on the rank of the trinket, ranging from Common to Heroic.
Which boon should you choose?
With her powers intact, Athena continues to be mighty, greatly augmenting Melinoe’s defensive capabilities. Her distinctive feature, Deflect, temporarily shields Melinoe from melee attacks and mirrors these back towards their source.
In the updated version of Hades, Athena’s blessings have become more potent than before. Instead of replacing her existing powers, these new blessings will enhance them. As a result, players will be able to enjoy additional benefits like the Deflect option alongside their existing boons.
Athena works diligently to enhance her power of reviving the seemingly deceased, specifically focusing on Melinoë.
The Boons in Hades 2 are as follows:
- Phalanx Shot: Your Specials also launch a projectile ahead that can Deflect, rearming after 2 Sec.
- Renewed Faith: Replenish all spent uses of Death Defiance now, and improved their potency.
- Stalwart Stand: Gain +1 Death Defiance that replenishes in each Location, but you Prime Magick.
- Mental Block: Your Casts also deal a burst of damage and make you briefly Deflect.
- Divine Dash: Your Dash deals damage to surrounding foes where you end up, and can Deflect.
- Defensive Posture: After you take damage, become Impervious for 2 Sec.
All of Athena’s powers are associated with the Fire element, and she doesn’t have any Infusions or Duo Boons at the moment.
