As a passionate admirer of authentic storytelling and representation, I wholeheartedly applaud Jacques Audiard for his commendable approach to Emilia Pérez. The film’s portrayal of a trans woman character, played by Karla Sofía Gascón who shares similar life experiences, adds an undeniable layer of authenticity that resonates deeply with me.

The movie has sparked varied opinions among critics concerning its portrayal of trans individuals. However, Gascón, being a trans woman herself, offered nothing but praise for Audiard’s method, despite expressing initial apprehensions.

In our creative collaboration, I found myself deeply immersed alongside the talented M. Audiard, as we meticulously crafted and sculpted the character from all angles. I was honored to be his trusted ally, offering my substantial support that he leaned heavily upon during this intricate process.

She stated that while Emilia’s life experience was most comparable to hers, this similarity was primarily based on physical transformations.

Absolutely, Emilia’s transformation in the movie is more dramatic and cinematic than what we would typically see in real life. We had numerous discussions about it, and I’m incredibly thankful to Jacques for allowing me to influence the development of her character. As one of the few individuals who could refine the Spanish dialogue or help create specific phrases and sentences, I feel quite privileged to have been a part of this creative process.

I’m absolutely ecstatic and filled with gratitude for being given the opportunity to contribute to both the film’s creation and the development of my character. As far as I know, I might have been the very first actress to get on board with this project.

In his own words, Audiard expressed delight in collaborating with Gascón, stating that he actually adjusted the character’s age in the script specifically to match her, as he felt she was perfectly suited for the role.

As a film enthusiast, let me share an interesting tidbit: I crossed paths with both Karla and Zoe around the same period. At first, the roles were intended for younger actors, in their twenties or thirties. However, upon meeting Zoe, who’s 45, and Karla, in her fifties, it felt more fitting. They, in a way, brought their ages into the characters, which I then adjusted accordingly.

I traveled to Mexico for location scouting and casting sessions, but the actresses I encountered were too young for the role. It didn’t fit the narrative since their age didn’t align with the backstory. On the other hand, Karla, who is in her 50s, has a rich history that lends itself well to acting. She brings experience and can convey the emotional depth required for her character.

He stated: “I believe Karla Sofía is exceptionally talented as an actress. She’s truly one-of-a-kind. If not for her, I’m unsure where our movie would be right now – we wouldn’t be discussing it today!
