As a film critic with a penchant for the eclectic and a soft spot for musicals that push boundaries, I found myself utterly captivated by Emilia Pérez, the latest Netflix offering from director Jacques Audiard. Having admittedly been living under a rock when it comes to Selena Gomez’s pop career, I was pleasantly surprised by her powerful performance in this film.
It’s hard to find someone who isn’t familiar with Selena Gomez, considering her worldwide fame as a pop icon and her role in the hit series Only Murders in the Building.
However, surprisingly enough, the acclaimed filmmaker behind the latest musical release on Netflix, titled “Emilia Pérez,” was once among those individuals. This movie features stars such as Gomez, Zoë Saldaña, and Karla Sofía Gascón.
But it didn’t take long for him to understand her appeal.
He admitted that he was not well-informed about Selena Gomez’s career and had not recognized her visually, as a translator conveyed his words.
I met her for the first time in New York, and from the moment I laid eyes on her, I felt certain she was perfect for the part. It was an instant connection, akin to love at first sight.
He added: “I was just starstruck meeting her. She comes across as someone who’s quite strong, but that’s also quite vulnerable, that we want to protect.”
In the movie, Gomez portrays the spouse of the main character (Gascón). Their relationship strains after Gascón’s character undergoes gender-affirming surgery and pretends to have died.
In the movie later on, they encounter each other once more, but Emilia disguises herself as an estranged aunt, and Jessi remains oblivious to the fact that this woman is actually her former spouse.
In our glowing five-star critique of the movie, we labeled it a “musical that pushes the boundaries of its genre” and commended the powerful portrayals given by both Gomez and Saldaña, along with Gascón’s outstanding performance in the leading role.
