What you need to know
- In an interview with Bloomberg reporter Dina Bass, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer touched on a number of topics regarding the Xbox business.
- Per Spencer, the experiment of bringing some former Xbox exclusives to PlayStation and Nintendo consoles has been a success.
- Spencer added that he doesn’t see any particular “red lines” on certain games that shouldn’t be brought over.
As a seasoned tech enthusiast with over two decades of immersion in the ever-evolving gaming world, I must admit that Microsoft’s recent approach to exclusivity is intriguing and somewhat refreshing. The blurred lines between platforms have long been a topic of intense debate among gamers like myself who grew up collecting cartridges for various consoles.
In light of the ongoing advancements within the gaming world, we’re starting to gain a clearer picture of strategies being implemented by major platform holders.
In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Phil Spencer, CEO of Gaming at Microsoft, discussed various aspects of how their Xbox business is faring. He specifically mentioned Microsoft’s strategy of moving four previously exclusive Xbox console games onto PlayStation and Nintendo platforms. Spencer expressed satisfaction with the outcomes and confirmed that they will continue to transfer games in this manner.
Spencer clarified that there aren’t any absolute boundaries marked in our portfolio with a ‘thou must not.’ Instead, he suggested that the possibility of porting any game is open, although at this stage, no decision has been made about Halo.
2024 saw Microsoft making available Obsidian Entertainment’s Grounded and Pentiment, Rare’s Sea of Thieves, as well as Hi-Fi Rush from Tango Gameworks – a studio that was formerly owned by Microsoft – on non-Xbox platforms. Some of these adaptations proved more successful than others, with Microsoft attempting to shut down Tango Gameworks before it was rescued by Krafton. However, Sea of Thieves on PlayStation 5 has been particularly noteworthy, with Matt Booty, head of Microsoft Gaming content and studios, commending the game’s impressive performance.
Constant change, but seeing a path through?
Balancing between inclusivity and exclusivity remains an ambiguous task for Microsoft, especially since they play the dual role of a significant multi-platform content provider and a console platform owner.
As an enthusiastic fan, I’m thrilled to share that MachineGames’ Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is making its debut as a timed exclusive on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, with PlayStation 5 following suit later. On the flip side, id Software’s DOOM: The Dark Ages promises a simultaneous release across all these platforms, including Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5, from day one!
So far, the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on various platforms, including Xbox Game Pass, appears to be a win for Microsoft’s strategy. This is indicated by an increase in subscribers on Xbox, as well as higher year-over-year sales on Steam and PlayStation, as pointed out by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
Changes are happening everywhere, and Microsoft isn’t the only company broadening its intellectual property (IP) onto various platforms. For instance, Sony’s PlayStation is now publishing LEGO Horizon Adventures on Nintendo Switch. However, saying something is one thing, but actually following through is another. It will be intriguing to discover which Xbox games will and won’t be adapted for other hardware in the upcoming years.
