As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over three decades of immersing myself in the vibrant world of superheroes, I must say that John Mulaney‘s recent comments about the genre piqued my curiosity. While his candid remarks about Spider-Ham and Plastic Man may suggest a lack of familiarity or interest in these characters, I can’t help but empathize with his bewilderment.
In a Q&A video with GQ published on Tuesday, comedian John Mulaney openly expressed his views on the superhero genre. He took part in their “Actually Me” segment, where he answered questions from fans that had been posted online for quite some time now, often without expecting him to respond. Mulaney was candid about his character Spider-Ham from the Spider-Verse series, and it seemed he wasn’t overly eager to join the DC Universe.
Towards the video’s conclusion, Mulaney discovered a tweet from early 2019 discussing Spider-Ham, depicting an image of him eating a hot dog with the query: “If Spider-Ham is a spider bitten by a radioactive pig, isn’t this cannibalism?” Mulaney replied: “No, but I don’t believe anyone is claiming it is.” He subsequently confessed: “Everything I know about Spider-Ham comes from the lines I say in the movie. I didn’t grasp what it was when I first arrived, and I still don’t understand now.
Mulaney pointed out that one aspect of the project’s secrecy during production was that he wasn’t informed about its title. He explained, “They wouldn’t even reveal the name to me. It had some sort of code name instead. They were hinting it was a Spider-Man spinoff, but I couldn’t care less. ‘Keep it a secret’ – who would I tell?
In the video, Mulaney didn’t limit his skepticism about comic book adaptations to just that one comment. Earlier on, a Reddit post suggesting either him or Pete Davidson for the role of Plastic Man in the live-action DC Universe caught his attention. His response was, “I know who Pete and I are, but I’m not sure what the rest of that implies. Is Plastic Man a DC character?
From my perspective as a gaming enthusiast, if given the chance to step into an action hero role like those I see on screen, it’d come down to the dollars and cents. To be frank, I could speak for Pete too – it boils down to the money. These action movies seem to have big paychecks attached, but let’s not forget that the media world is always shifting and adapting.
Fans of Spider-Ham can rest easy, even if Mulaney seems uninterested, as he’s still slated to appear in “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.” Although Spider-Ham had a silent role in the previous installment, last year, co-director Joaquim Dos Santos hinted to Collider that they would be featured more prominently in the upcoming film.
Last summer’s Hollywood labor strikes halted the production of “Beyond the Spider-Verse,” but it resumed towards the end of the year and is yet to announce a release date. The movie is slated to wrap up the Spider-Man trilogy in the Spider-Verse. Currently, there are no public plans for a live-action adaptation of Plastic Man.
