Xbox is Still Eyeing More Acquisitions, Phil Spencer Says

As a seasoned gaming enthusiast with decades of immersion under my belt, I find myself both excited and cautiously optimistic about Microsoft’s ongoing quest to expand its first-party gaming studios. Having witnessed the rise and fall of numerous game developers over the years, I can’t help but feel a bit of trepidation when big names start gobbling up smaller ones.

After the massive acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $69 billion, discussions about more acquisitions by Xbox have apparently slowed down. However, it appears that Microsoft plans to keep expanding its collection of gaming studios by bringing on new teams, a practice they intend to persist with.

According to Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft’s Gaming division, they are actively looking for additional acquisitions. Specifically, they aim to expand their presence in Asia to increase geographical variety, and mobile game development studios are a prime target for these potential acquisitions.

He confirmed that we are keen on participating in the gaming market, and whenever we discover groups, tools, and expertise that complement our gaming efforts at Microsoft, we’ll definitely stay vigilant.

It’s noteworthy that Microsoft previously owned an Asian first-party game development studio, specifically Tango Gameworks (known for creating games like Hi-Fi Rush and The Evil Within). However, Microsoft closed this studio earlier in the year. Now, it has been revived and acquired by Krafton.

It’s been observed over the past few years that Tango Gameworks, among other first-party studios owned by Microsoft, has experienced either major layoffs or complete shutdowns. Therefore, it would be prudent for the company to address these problems before expanding its studio collection further.
