As a child of the ’90s, I can vividly recall the thrill and excitement that movies like Idle Hands brought to my adolescent years. The unique blend of horror and humor, coupled with the talented ensemble cast, made it an instant classic for me and many others of my generation. Finn Wolfhard and Jason Reitman’s upcoming take on this beloved film fills me with a sense of nostalgia tinged with anticipation.
In the ’90s, audiences enjoyed a mix of stories where teenagers faced harrowing circumstances and tales centered around lazy characters embarking on exciting journeys. The 1999 film “Idle Hands” blended these two genres together, and now Finn Wolfhard from “Stranger Things” is joining forces with Jason Reitman, director of “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” to revitalize this idea, as reported by Variety. Wolfhard will be penning the script alongside collaborator Billy Bryk, with the duo having previously created the movie “Hell of a Summer.” According to reports, they are also being considered for the director’s chair, while Reitman will serve as a producer.
Reitman praised Finn and Billy’s first directorial venture, a fresh perspective on the movie ‘Idle Hands’, which encapsulates a disenchanted generation. He expressed enthusiasm for their project, stating that they are eager to help them translate their distinctive vision onto the screen, unleashing the demons in the process.
The primary film revolves around a character who’s a stoner, whose hand turns into a lethal entity after being possessed, even when separated from his body. Although it’s based on a horror concept, the movie is peppered with ample humor and mystical adventures. “Idle Hands” showcased rising stars like Devon Sawa, Jessica Alba, Seth Green, Elden Henson, and Vivica A. Fox. Not only was the film an assembly of talented actors, but its soundtrack also featured several alternative bands, such as Rob Zombie, The Offspring, Blink-182, and Static-X.

Initially, the movie “Idle Hands” didn’t resonate strongly with viewers or critics upon release, failing to match the success of popular teen-focused movies released in the same year. Movies like “American Pie,” “She’s All That,” “Varsity Blues,” “10 Things I Hate About You,” “Cruel Intentions,” and “Outside Providence” were all well-received almost instantly, building a dedicated fanbase. However, while it took some time for “Idle Hands” to gain a following as large as these other films, its unique mix of comedy and horror has been steadily growing its fan base year by year.
Apart from fans, it’s not just them who are intrigued by the idea of this property being resurrected; Sawa himself has shown an interest in having the concept shine once more.
In 2020, the actor expressed his wish for a modern reboot of “Idle Hands” and a fresh take on the storyline featuring a new, young Anton. He believes today’s talented actors could bring something exciting to the hand-related concepts in the movie.
The actor has previously expressed his eagerness to rejoin the series for a potential new installment. In an interview with ComicBook in 2019, he stated, “Given the chance, I’d do it in a heartbeat! If there was one film I wish to make a sequel to, that would be it. The set, with Elden, Seth Green, Vivica Fox, Alba, Jack Noseworthy, and others, was like summer camp – we had so much fun!
Stay tuned for updates on the new Idle Hands.
