Josh O’Connor thinks filming a sex scene for a movie is royally unsexy.
The British actor recently opened up about how filming racy scenes, like the almost-threesome he had with costars Zendaya and Mike Faist in Challengers, are actually pretty weird.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, published on November 13th, Josh remarked, “A sex scene is a rather peculiar experience.” He went on to say, “It’s the least sensual thing imaginable. I’m sure Mike Faist and Zendaya could vouch for that.
The 34-year-old, who previously played the role of King Charles III (during his tenure as Prince of Wales) in Netflix’s “The Crown”, explained that acting in intimate scenes isn’t as steamy as it might seem.
He went on to say, “It may seem thrilling on-screen, but behind the scenes, it’s much like a fight scene. Whether it’s an action stunt, a dance routine, or something else, it’s all carefully planned and practiced. You’re typically surrounded by a crowd of people – camera operators, sound technicians, and lighting crew.
According to Josh, expressing genuine human emotions on screen proves to be a greater challenge compared to depicting intimate or sensual scenes.
I find myself baring my soul and getting personal with other performers, which feels both enlightening and terrifying,” I admit. “It’s like diving deep into the unknown parts of myself, areas that are usually tucked away or veiled. This exploration can be downright nerve-wracking.
However, although shooting the more private sequences might prove challenging, Josh manages to enjoy himself during the playful, flirtatious exchanges, like the churro scene in Challengers, which many fans find suggestive of a strong romantic tension between Josh’s and Mike’s characters.
During an interview with Capital FM in April, Josh admitted, “I hadn’t had anything to eat that day, so I was ravenous. The moment I tasted a churro for the first time, I was amazed by its deliciousness. After savoring mine, I also enjoyed Mike’s.
And, according to Zendaya, that delicious shot wasn’t planned ahead of time.
She informed the radio station that the scene with the churro wasn’t planned, it was more like something they discovered alongside director Luca Guadagnino.
