As a hardcore Voltron fan who has spent countless hours defending the universe alongside these legendary lions, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as I hear about the series leaving Netflix. It was during the epic battles and heartwarming camaraderie of Team Voltron that I first fell in love with animated storytelling on this incredible platform. Now, it seems like the lion-shaped guardian of our binge-watching days is about to disappear from our screens.
Voltron: Legendary Defender will be leaving Netflix later this December, and the team behind the animated series has responded to Netflix removing their own original series. Voltron: Legendary Defender marks a very important period in Netflix’s history. It might not be the first original project they have ever produced, but it’s by far the first very notable animated series exclusive to the platform. The series had a massive fandom for the entire eight season run, but it’s been quite a long time since that final season had been released. Now as the series is gearing up to be removed from Netflix, the team behind it is speaking out.
Earlier this Fall, I noticed that “Voltron: Legendary Defender” was set to depart from Netflix’s streaming service on December 7th, sparking curiosity among fans who consider it their original series. In an official update shared via the show’s Facebook page, they clarified that the reason for its removal is because the license for the series has expired. Produced by Dreamworks Animation and licensed to Netflix, ongoing discussions are taking place to determine whether or not Netflix will renew the license for future viewings.
Why Is Voltron: Legendary Defender Leaving Netflix?
With regards to the status of Voltron: Legendary Defender on Netflix, the Voltron team has provided some clarity. They explained that Voltron: Legendary Defender was not created by Netflix but rather produced by DreamWorks Animation and leased to Netflix. This lease is set to expire.
Although you can watch Seasons 1-6 of the series on Amazon Prime, locating Seasons 7 and 8 might become challenging if they get taken down by Netflix. Some fans have speculated that this could be due to Amazon MGM Studios working on a live-action Voltron film, but in reality, the production of the live-action film and the end of the streaming contract are two separate events. It just so happens that the film, which has been in development for quite some time, is going into production at about the same time as the six-year terms of the Netflix contract are expiring.
What Happens to Voltron Now?
At present, as of this fall statement, Netflix has marked December 6th as the last day for streaming the eighth season of “Voltron: Legendary Defender.” Given its binge-worthy nature, you might finish watching it all before that date if you wish to do so. This series serves as a fresh reboot of the original “Voltron” anime, and has introduced characters that have quickly captivated fans’ hearts.
If the license for “Voltron: Legendary Defender” truly expires in December and the show departs from Netflix, it’s going to be quite a letdown for fans of the series. Even though the animated show ended some time ago, there’s no fandom as dedicated to their franchise as Voltron fans. This is why the upcoming live-action film has a strong chance of doing well, and losing this series from Netflix would be a blow for those who regularly rewatch it. We can only wait and see what happens next.
