As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of Hollywood for decades, I find it intriguing and somewhat disappointing that same-sex moments continue to be trimmed from blockbuster films. The revelation about Gladiator 2’s lost kiss between Denzel Washington and an unnamed character adds another layer to this ongoing saga.
In the UK, Gladiator 2 will hit movie screens tomorrow, and it’s been disclosed by Denzel Washington that a scene featuring a same-sex kiss was initially included but later removed from the film.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share that it was truly captivating listening to the esteemed actor, whose portrayal of Macrinus in the movie has sparked unanimous praise from critics, express his thoughts during an engaging interview with the LGBTQ+ magazine, Gayety.
“I kissed a guy full on the lips, and I guess they weren’t ready for that yet. I killed him about five minutes later. It’s Gladiator. It’s the kiss of death.”
It seems this is the second occasion where a scene involving a same-sex kiss has been edited out of the film. Earlier, Paul Mescal disclosed he had spontaneously kissed Pedro Pascal on the forehead during filming – but that moment didn’t end up in the final cut of the movie.
He mentioned during his interview with Cinema Blend that he hadn’t informed Ridley of his plans. Afterward, he felt anxious because he feared Ridley might dislike what he had done.
In a somewhat jittery manner, I tentatively asked over the radio, ‘Ridley, what did you think of the forehead kiss? A yes or no?’ There was a faint response, almost like static, that whispered, ‘I’m afraid I did.’ Although it seems to have vanished in the editing process, I have complete faith in this man’s abilities, particularly his knack for crafting films.
I mentioned that I wasn’t sure why that particular scene didn’t end up in the final version of the movie, expressing, “Perhaps it should have been included,” and Mescal proposed the idea of incorporating it into a future extended edition or director’s cut of the film.
