Mario and Luigi: Brothership Sells Over 63,000 Units on Japanese Debut, PS5 Pro Enjoys Strong Start

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the latest release, Mario and Luigi: Brothership, has left me a bit perplexed. Given my familiarity with the stellar sales figures of past Mario RPGs, it’s hard not to feel a tad disappointed by the relatively lackluster start Brothership seems to have had in Japan, and that includes the UK market as well.

Last week saw the highly anticipated release of Mario and Luigi: Brothership, but its Japanese sales performance appears to have started a bit slower compared to recent Mario RPGs. This is reminiscent of its launch in the UK as well. According to weekly sales data for hardware and physical software from Famitsu, Brothership debuted at number one on the charts; however, it did so with over 63,000 units sold, which is a relatively lower figure compared to other recent Mario RPGs.

Last year’s remake of Super Mario RPG outperformed its initial sales in Japan with more than 301,000 copies sold, whereas Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door managed to sell over 115,000 copies in the same region at the start of this year. Sales for Brothership during its launch were lower than all previous Mario and Luigi titles, excluding remakes on 3DS, with the exception of Paper Jam which sold more than 50,000 units upon release.

Last week saw another new release, titled Slitterhead, which is Bokeh Game Studios’ first action horror title. Despite the launch, sales have been relatively quiet for this game, placing it at No. 9 on the charts with over 4,000 units sold. On the other hand, Super Mario Party Jamboree, recently launched, continues to sell well, with more than 43,000 units sold in its fourth week.

In terms of hardware, last week witnessed the debut of the PS5 Pro, and the console has had a robust start in Japan. The latest model managed to sell more than 78,000 units, pushing the total weekly sales of the PS5 in the region beyond 88,000. This makes it the top-selling console of the week in Japan, an unusual occasion where the Switch was outsold. Nintendo’s console sold approximately 64,000 units during the same period.

The following chart presents the complete details of hardware and software sales (both physical) in Japan for the week concluding on November 10.
