Spider-Noir: Spider-Man Series Casts a Matrix Resurrections Alum in Mystery Role

As a seasoned gamer and avid comic book fan with a soft spot for alternate realities, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and intrigue upon hearing about Andrew Lewis Caldwell joining the cast of ‘Spider-Noir’. With his diverse roles, from Jude in ‘The Matrix Resurrections‘ to characters on shows like ‘Henry Danger’, ‘iZombie’, and more, it’s clear that he brings a wealth of experience to the table.

Andrew Lewis Caldwell is set to star in the upcoming live-action series “Spider-Noir,” streaming on Amazon’s MGM+ and Prime Video. This news was revealed on Wednesday by Deadline, but specifics about the character he will portray are yet to be disclosed. Caldwell joins a cast that already includes Lamorne Morris, Brendan Gleeson, Abraham Popoola, Li Jun Li, and Nicolas Cage playing the lead role.

In the realm of genre entertainment, Caldwell is a well-known figure, particularly for fans who followed the late 2021 sequel, “The Matrix Resurrections.” He portrayed Jude, a character within the Matrix that functioned as Neo’s friend, but was secretly assigned by the Analyst to keep tabs on him. Apart from this, Caldwell has recurring roles in “Henry Danger” and its spinoffs, as well as “iZombie.” The former young actor is now part of a cast of eight, all with unspecified roles, in “Spider-Noir.” This upcoming film takes place in a reality distinct from “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” though Cage reprises his role.

The event will be set in a different era of New York City during the 1930s, featuring Spider-Man Noir as a seasoned private investigator, who is the city’s sole superhero. Morris portrays a courageous journalist named Robbie Robertson, and Gleeson embodies a neighborhood crime lord. Li plays a nightclub vocalist, Popoola takes on the role of an aspiring World War I veteran with ambition, while Jack Huston assumes the character of a bodyguard. The remaining actors, whose roles have not been disclosed, include Karen Rodriguez, Lukas Haas, Cameron Britton, Cary Christopher, Michael Kostroff, Scott MacArthur, Joe Massingill, Whitney Rice, and Amanda Schull.

Since at least 2019, Spider-Noir has been under production as part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). However, the COVID-19 pandemic and Hollywood strikes caused delays, with filming only starting this past summer in Los Angeles. The series will consist of eight episodes, but a release date hasn’t been announced yet. Filming is set to carry on until February.

Currently, it appears that only the Spider-Noir series is in active development for the SSU. Earlier plans for a show titled Silk: Spider Society didn’t work out this past spring. There was also a potential project called Silver & Black, centered around Black Cat and Silver Sable, but news on its progress has been scarce since April 2020. It’s uncertain if that project is still ongoing. For now, the SSU continues to concentrate mostly on movies, with strong suggestions that they are connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whether Spider-Noir will be part of this connection remains to be seen.
