Cross ending explained: Who was behind Maria’s murder?

As a movie enthusiast with over three decades of crime thriller binge-watching under my belt, I must say that Cross has certainly earned its spot among the greats. The intricate plot twists, gripping suspense, and Aldis Hodge’s mesmerizing performance as Alex Cross have made this series a must-see for any true crime drama fan.

You can now stream the entire first season of the crime thriller “Cross” on Amazon Prime Video, where Aldis Hodge portrays the character created by James Patterson, who’s battling a notorious serial killer, nicknamed “The Fanboy.

In an attempt to mimic notorious serial killers, the Fanboy disfigured his victims prior to taking their lives. Meanwhile, Alex found himself in a desperate struggle against the clock as he strived to rescue his most recent victim, Shannon.

How did the plot of that story unfold, and, in a different context, what insights did Alex gain regarding Maria’s murderer?

Since the show has been renewed for a second season, here’s what you should catch up on regarding the conclusion of Cross season 1 and where it leaves off for Alex and the other characters.

What happened to Ed Ramsey?

In the seventh installment of Cross, it appeared that Ed Ramsey deceived Alex and the whole team by convincingly staging his own death, instead of getting captured.

As Ramsey moved towards Shannon in the hospital with murderous intent, it was Alex who suddenly appeared behind him, gun at the ready. “It’s over, Ramsey,” Alex said, having realized that a man like Ramsey would never have abandoned his obsession as easily as it seemed.

In a turn of events, Ramsey was apprehended, and Alex along with their team had more than enough proof to put him away, including his scrapbook. Yet, they discerned that this was precisely what Ramsey intended – he sought the disclosure of information and the tarnishing of his own reputation.

Given the situation, they arranged for Ramsey to observe the destruction of the scrapbook via a video call. This way, his name would lose significance and he’d have no lasting memory. In the police station, he let out a chilling scream of terror.

Even though there was sufficient evidence linking him to the murder of Emir Goodspeed, an active advocate for Black Lives Matter, it appears he may face a prolonged imprisonment – potentially spending the rest of his life behind bars.

Who was Maria’s real killer and how did Alex defeat them?

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but share my thoughts about the gripping finale of the series “Cross.” In that heart-pounding episode, I, the protagonist Alex, discovered an earth-shattering truth: The man who took away my wife was none other than Peter, a name I never thought would be connected to such a heinous act. Here’s the twist – Peter was acting under the orders of someone we had unknowingly forged a bond with, Damon Cross’s latest piano tutor, the enigmatic Miss Nancy.

Miss Nancy had acted like a mother figure to both Peter and a woman named Deirdre. Deirdre was imprisoned many years ago. Under Miss Nancy’s guidance, Deirdre admitted guilt for a murder that Peter had actually committed. Nancy felt that as a white woman, Deirdre would receive a more lenient sentence compared to the harsh punishment Peter, a black man, might have faced.

Nevertheless, Alex stated that Deirdre displayed characteristics of a “psychopathic personality.” Consequently, she received a life sentence. Shortly following this declaration, Deirdre ended her own life.

A strong blend of remorse and anger surged within Nancy and Peter, leading Nancy to direct her feelings towards Alex as contempt and accusation. You see, Nancy had commanded Peter to take the life of Maria, Alex’s wife, under the guise of being a Union Market employee with a criminal history – a man whom Alex had already held accountable for his actions, going so far as to brutally assault him afterwards.

In a subsequent event, Miss Nancy drew near to the Cross family and escorted them to a remote cabin, intending for Alex to face a difficult decision: selecting one of his own children to be sacrificed.

In the end, it was Alex and John Sampson who successfully halted the actions of both individuals. Unfortunately, Peter was taken into custody, whereas Miss Nancy tragically took her own life by igniting herself in flames.

Where did we leave Alex, Kayla and the rest of the characters?

At the close of events in Cross, upon discovering the true culprit of Maria’s death, Alex expressed his regret to the employee he had wrongfully assaulted. This employee graciously pardoned him and withdrew the accusations he had filed against Alex.

In an effort to resolve the “Fanboy” case and provide closure for the bereaved families while denying Ramsey the attention he sought, Kayla went to see Bobby Trey, his associate, in hopes of persuading him to admit to the wrongdoings.

She informed him that Alex would uncover proof to convict him for the murders he had indeed carried out, and also shared with Bobby that if he provided sufficient details linking him to Ramsey’s criminal activities, authorities could manipulate events to make it seem like Bobby was the mastermind and perpetrator.

In return, he was offered a 24-month sentence and full immunity.

In the end, once he agreed, she informed him that if he supplied her with the incriminating evidence Ramsey held against the influential figures in his circle, she would generously compensate him upon his release – a proposition he appeared to agree to.

Cross is available to watch on Prime Video.
