Dandadan Kills a Major Character (And Why The Latest Episode Might be 2024’s Best Anime)

As a long-time anime enthusiast with over two decades of immersion in this vibrant world, I can confidently say that episode seven of Dandadan is undoubtedly one of the most poignant and emotionally gripping episodes to grace our screens in recent years. Science SARU has once again proven their mastery over the medium, delivering a narrative that transcends the typical action-packed fare we’ve come to expect from this series.

In a departure from its usual action-packed and supernatural storylines, the anime adaptation of “Dandadan” in 2024 could be hailed as the best episode of the year by focusing less on these aspects. Studio Science SARU, known for popular series like “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off”, “Japan Sinks”, and “Devilman Crybaby”, might have outdone themselves with episode seven of Yukinobu Tatsu’s adaptation. This installment not only delivers a poignant narrative but also shockingly takes the life of a significant character, a twist that many fans may not have anticipated.

Heads Up! If you haven’t seen Episode Seven of Dandadan yet, be aware that we’re about to discuss some major spoilers. In our previous encounter, Okarun and Momo were joined by Aira as they battled against a formidable foe – the spirit known as “Acrobat Silky”. With the power to transform her hair into deadly weapons, Acrobat Silky was believed to be the mother of Aira. This belief drove her to extreme lengths, including killing anyone who stood between them, in an attempt to solidify their family bond. Despite her intimidating appearance, her background is so heart-wrenching that you might find yourself moved to tears while watching Dandadan’s latest episode.

R.I.P. Aira

In the story, both Momo and Okarun lived after being swallowed by Acrobat Silky, however, Aira didn’t share their fortune. As Turbo Granny explained, the extraordinary powers of the shonen heroes shielded them from meeting an untimely demise. Since Aira is just an ordinary girl, she couldn’t benefit from those protective abilities. The anime characters tried to revive Aira when her heart stopped, but unfortunately, their combined efforts fell short in this instance. Fortunately, Acrobat Silky herself stepped in at the last moment to offer a surprising aid.

To ensure Aira’s survival, Acrobat Silky must sacrifice her spirit. Although the specter holds great power, choosing to save Aira would mean the spirit would vanish completely. Facing the possibility of losing both life and afterlife, Acrobat Silky decides to pass on her essence. This selfless act is moved by Aira’s heart-wrenching backstory that anime fans witness, which could make Science SARU’s upcoming episode an emotional masterpiece, potentially earning it the best anime episode of the year.

Acrobat Silky’s Backstory

Acrobat Silky wasn’t always a ghost, but rather a woman who led an ordinary life and raised a child. In a heartbreaking turn of events, we get a glimpse into Silky’s human struggles as she strived to support herself and her daughter, ensuring they had the necessities for survival and growth. During this flashback sequence, we witness the future spectre tirelessly working to dance with her daughter, even going so far as to purchase a dress that caught her eye while wandering through the city streets together.

It seemed that Adobe (Acrobat) encountered some malicious individuals, possibly due to financial struggles. These individuals brutally attacked Silky and abducted her child, which left Acrobat, in a desperate search for her daughter, with deep wounds on her arms. In a dazed state, she wandered the streets until she crossed paths with a young Aira, whom she mistakenly believed to be her own child. This encounter ultimately led to the emergence of the formidable spirit we have been introduced to.

In this episode, while it’s Aira whose heart momentarily ceases functioning, it’s Acrobat Silky who meets her end. Remarkably, Acrobat Silky transfers her spiritual essence to Aira, enabling the young human to survive. This transfer could potentially grant Aira extraordinary abilities, similar to how Okarun derives power from Turbo Granny. So, keep an eye out for Aira demonstrating some unique powers that we’ve seen Acrobat Silky exhibit.
