Splinter Cell Movie Starring Tom Hardy Is Dead

As a longtime Splinter Cell enthusiast who’s spent countless hours stalking shadows and hacking into enemy networks, I can’t help but feel a twinge of melancholy at the news that the Tom Hardy-led film adaptation is officially dead. The franchise has been my go-to for high-stakes espionage action since the early 2000s, and like Sam Fisher himself, I held onto hope that this movie would finally see the light of day.

It’s now confirmed that the long-stalled Splinter Cell movie starring Tom Hardy is officially cancelled, a fact that should not come as a surprise to many given its history. Splinter Cell is one of the most cherished video game series, and multiple attempts have been made to bring it to the big screen. Interestingly, there was even a sneak peek for a Splinter Cell movie on the disc for Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, yet no concrete details or cast members were revealed.

Back in the early 2000s, it was Peter Berg, director of “Friday Night Lights” and “Lone Survivor”, who was selected to direct a film based on the character Sam Fisher. During an interview with IGN in 2005, he mentioned potential actors like Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, Eric Bana, and Thomas Jane (the Punisher actor) as possible candidates for portraying Sam Fisher. However, this plan never came to fruition.

2012 saw the announcement that Tom Hardy would star as Sam Fisher, with Doug Liman (known for “Edge of Tomorrow”) set to direct the film. After a ten-year period of minimal updates, many presumed the project had been abandoned. However, there was a glimmer of hope following the success of recent gaming adaptations such as “The Last of Us”. Unfortunately, it appears that this isn’t happening. In an interview with TheDirect, producer Basil Iwanyk confirmed that the Splinter Cell movie is no more; the creative team couldn’t manage to make it work. Despite their disappointment, Iwanyk praised the development efforts, expressing regret that the project didn’t reach completion.

The film had incredible potential, unfortunately, it fell short in terms of scripting and budget. It would have been spectacular. We developed countless ideas for it, aiming for a raw, impressive outcome. Regrettably, this is one of those projects that slipped through our fingers, which is truly unfortunate.

The Splinter Cell franchise has faced numerous challenges since 2013. The last game released, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, was unfortunately launched amidst heavy competition from games such as Saints Row 4 and Grand Theft Auto V. Additionally, it came out before the new consoles, which were not backward compatible at the time. Despite being well-received and fondly remembered, the game did not perform commercially well during its release. In 2021, a remake of the original Splinter Cell game was announced, but since it had only just entered development, updates have been scarce. There were rumors suggesting it might be canceled, but it is anticipated to still be in production and we hope to see more of it soon.

After appearing in games like Ghost Recon: Wildlands and Rainbow Six: Siege, fans have been yearning for more of Sam Fisher’s storyline in a different format. So far, there has been no news about any live-action projects such as films or new TV series featuring the character. However, an animated Splinter Cell television show is set to premiere on Netflix in 2025, with Liev Schreiber taking on the role of Sam Fisher. Details about the project are scarce at this time, and it remains unclear if Schreiber will be the new voice of Sam Fisher in future games like the remake or if Ubisoft plans to bring Michael Ironside back into the mix. Interestingly, Ironside was not included in The Blacklist but returned for Ghost Recon: Wildlands content.

Just like Splinter Cell, the Metal Gear Solid spy series hasn’t had much luck transitioning to the big screen. For quite a while now, it’s been stuck in a frustrating cycle of cinematic development. Things seemed promising when Jordan Vogt-Roberts, the director behind Kong: Skull Island, began making significant progress on the project and even shared concept art with the public. However, Oscar Isaac, who was cast as Solid Snake, appears to have left the film according to recent reports. Despite this setback, it was confirmed earlier this year that the movie is still in development, although the individuals involved are uncertain.
