James Gunn Reveals Man of Steel Suit Was “Torn to Shreds” During Superman Auditions

As a lifelong DC fan who’s seen more Superman reboots than I care to remember, I must admit that James Gunn’s upcoming 2025 Superman film is causing quite a stir! The news of Tom Brittney tearing Henry Cavill’s suit during an audition, and David Corenswet being too tall for it, had me chuckling. It seems like the old Man of Steel suit has finally found its place in the DCU after all!

In simpler terms, the upcoming trailer for James Gunn’s 2025 Superman reboot is expected to be released soon, sparking excitement among fans who are eager for any news, whether about the storyline or the production process. On a forum called Threads, user mr_savitar_oficial asked James Gunn if it was true that actor Tom Brittney had worn Henry Cavill’s Superman suit during his audition and accidentally damaged it. Brittney himself confirmed this, saying it took about 30 minutes to put on the suit, adjust it, and he might have broken it in the process.

Currently, Gunn is recognized for setting the record straight about the stories associated with his work at DCU. He stated: “Indeed, there were issues with Tom’s portrayal, and Corenswet was simply too tall, which led to a lot of criticism. However, let me emphasize that Tom is among my favorite actors, an immensely talented individual.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the iconic “Man of Steel” attire, which made its debut in that contentious 2013 film, with a slight adjustment appearing in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”. Interestingly, a black version of this suit graced our screens in “Zack Snyder’s Justice League”. Despite the criticisms leveled at the DCEU’s early phases, even the most vocal detractors conceded that this costume was one of the standout elements. It’s heartening to know that it found a purpose, however brief, in the grand scheme of things.

What Do We Know About Gunn’s Reboot?

The upcoming movie “Superman” will mark the beginning of director Gunn’s DC Universe, a new attempt at creating a world where various DC characters coexist, following the unsuccessful DCEU. Officially launching on December 5 this year with “Creature Commandos,” Superman is set for release on July 11, 2025. Following this will be the second season of “Peacemaker,” which has been reworked to exist in a distinct universe while featuring the same cast. Finally, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is scheduled for June 26, 2026.

In this new adaptation of Superman, David Corenswet replaces Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan, famously known for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, steps into the role of Lois Lane. However, unlike the title character and his beloved, Superman will bring many more iconic DC figures to life. Isabela Merced will portray Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion, a favorite of Guardians of the Galaxy fans, will play Guy Gardner, also known as Green Lantern. Edi Gathegi from X-Men: First Class is set for the role of Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan from HBO’s Barry takes on the character Metamorpho in this production.

In other significant characters from the world of Superman, Nicholas Hoult is planning to bald for the part of Lex Luthor, while Skyler Gisondo, known for his work in Santa Clarita Diet, will portray Jimmy Olsen. The new version of Superman will connect with its related DCU projects too. Frank Grillo will resume his role as Rick Flag Sr., who he previously played in the animated series Creature Commandos, this time in live-action form. Milly Alcock is set to make her appearance as Supergirl here, followed by leading a solo film in 2026.
