As a cinephile who’s been around the block more times than I care to remember, I must admit that Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel has piqued my interest. The original was a cinematic tour de force, and while it’s always tricky to live up to such legendary status, this new installment seems to be giving it a valiant effort.
In Ridley Scott’s follow-up to Gladiator from 2000, you won’t find a multitude of familiar actors reprising their roles because a significant number of the original characters met their end in the initial movie.
However, in the latest movie, a significant character from the initial film reprises his crucial part – indeed, the most pivotal role among all – is Lucius, formerly portrayed as a youngster by Spencer Treat Clark when he appeared under Lucilla and Uncle Commodus’s watch.
In his mature years now, he’s undergone a transformation for this role, portrayed by the talented actor Paul Mescal, who is known for his work in Normal People and Aftersun.
Initially, when we encounter him, he resides quite a distance from Rome. However, as the story unfolds, destiny propels him to return to his childhood home, where he becomes entangled in a gripping saga of merciless vengeance.
Who exactly is Lucius, and does his character stem from a genuine historical figure? Here’s what you ought to learn.
Who is Lucius in Gladiator II?
In the movie Gladiator II, Lucius assumes a new identity as Hanno, the ex-heir to the Roman Empire, who resides far from Rome in the Kingdom of Numidia. He shares this life with his spouse, living away from the imperial city at the story’s outset.
However, upon the death of his wife and subsequent capture by the invading Roman army, Lucius embarks on a journey to become a gladiator. Driven by a fierce thirst for vengeance, he aims to punish Marcus Acacius, whom he believes is the culprit behind the disintegration of his life.
Indeed, anyone acquainted with the initial film would recall that Lucius was previously depicted as a child, portrayed by Spencer Treat Clark in the movie. He was the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and the nephew of the morally corrupt Emperor Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix.
In my humble opinion, as a seasoned movie critic, the sequel offers an intriguing twist that was subtly teased in the trailers – our protagonist discovers a shocking truth: his father is none other than Maximus, the iconic character brilliantly portrayed by Russell Crowe. While there were subtle hints pointing towards this possibility in the first installment, and it became a widely discussed fan theory over time, this sequel finally confirms it officially.
In the opening of Gladiator II, it’s been fifteen long years since Lucius last spoke with his mother. As he makes his way back to Rome, this reunion becomes a crucial moment, one that carries significant weight and is pivotal in the upcoming movie.
Was Lucius a real historical figure?
In essence, the Lucius depicted in the movie is more like a work of fiction rather than an accurate representation of Lucilla’s actual son, as they share the same name but not much else.
Who plays Lucius in Gladiator II?
In the movie, it’s Irish thespian Paul Mescal who assumes the role previously portrayed by Spencer Treat Clark as a young character, in the initial adaptation.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been captivated by Paul Mescal’s meteoric rise to fame since his breakout performance in Normal People back in 2020. Since then, he’s graced our screens with an impressive lineup of critically-acclaimed films. First, a noteworthy role in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Lost Daughter in 2021, and then, a nomination for an Oscar with his outstanding portrayal in Aftersun. Most recently, he delivered a heart-wrenching performance alongside Andrew Scott in All of Us Strangers, leaving me moved beyond words.
Among his other cinematic works are Carmen, God’s Creatures, and Foe. He has numerous upcoming projects as well, such as The History of Sound, Hamnet, and Richard Linklater’s Merrily We Roll Along, which will be filmed over a span of 20 years.
Paul’s contribution to the character is akin to an intricate narrative. It’s a tale about a child left behind, about someone who has witnessed shocking inequalities. In his portrayal of Lucius, he conveys a profound depth and emotion.
