As a movie enthusiast with a heart for animated classics and an affection for underdog characters, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement upon seeing the first look at Mason Thames as Hiccup in the live-action remake of “How To Train Your Dragon.” The bond between Hiccup and his dragon companion, Toothless, is one that has touched the hearts of millions, and it’s heartening to see this friendship being brought to life in a new medium.

Take a peek at the initial glimpse of Hiccup in the live-action adaptation of “How To Train Your Dragon”. The heartwarming bond between Viking boy Hiccup and his faithful dragon companion, Toothless, is the essence of the “How To Train Your Dragon” series, which has produced three animated films. The series based on “How To Train Your Dragon” is now transforming from animation to live-action, with Mason Thames (known for “Black Phone”) stepping into the role of Hiccup. “Empire” magazine has shared the first image of Thames as our hero Hiccup, all geared up in his Viking attire amidst a dragon pen at Berk, as the crowd enthusiastically supports him.

Director Dean DeBlois takes charge in directing the live-action adaptation of “How To Train Your Dragon”, a position he’s familiar with as he also helmed the previous four movies, starting with Chris Sanders on the initial release in 2010. The picture you see below is likely a scene where Hiccup feigns combat against Toothless. However, viewers of the first “How To Train Your Dragon” movie will recall that Hiccup demonstrated to his fellow Vikings that dragons are not creatures to be feared.

In the adaptation of How To Train Your Dragon, DeBlois noted that the tension is significantly heightened because a genuine, lifelike dragon is rampaging and attempting to harm the protagonist. He also mentioned that Hiccup embodies those who are unconventional, making him a character many can identify with. Regarding Mason Thames, DeBlois expressed that his portrayal of Hiccup had an element of awkwardness but also a sense of vulnerability due to being 15 during the audition process.

The live-action How To Train Your Dragon arrives in theaters in June 13, 2025.
