James Gunn Reveals Man of Steel Suit Was “Torn to Shreds” During Superman Auditions

As a lifelong fan who has witnessed the ups and downs of Superman adaptations over the years, I must say, I’m both thrilled and apprehensive about James Gunn’s 2025 reboot. The news of Tom Brittney tearing Henry Cavill’s suit during an audition, followed by David Corenswet’s towering stature causing further damage, is a bit amusing to me, like watching a classic comic book mishap unfold in real life!

In simpler terms, a fan on social media named mr_savitar_oficial asked James Gunn if the claim was true that Tom Brittney, who recently auditioned for the role of Superman in the 2025 reboot, wore Henry Cavill’s suit during his audition and accidentally damaged it. The fan also shared a quote from Brittney stating that it takes around half an hour to put on and adjust the suit, and he may have inadvertently broken it.

Currently, Gunn has become widely recognized for setting the record straight about stories connected to his work at DCU. He stated: “Indeed, there was a misunderstanding with Tom, and then Corenswet joined in who was excessively tall. As a result, it didn’t turn out as planned. By the way, Tom is undeniably one of my favorite actors. An extremely gifted individual.

In the 2013 movie that sparked controversy, the Superman suit known as “Man of Steel” made its appearance. A slightly altered version showed up in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” while a black suit was used in “Zack Snyder’s Justice League.” Despite the disagreements among the critics of the DCEU’s launch, they all seemed to appreciate this suit. It’s heartening to learn that it ultimately had a role to play, albeit for a brief period.

What Do We Know About Gunn’s Reboot?

Woman of Tomorrow” is slated for June 26, 2026.

In this new take on Superman, David Corenswet is stepping into the shoes previously worn by Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan, known for her role in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, will be taking on the part of Lois Lane. However, it’s important to note that Superman won’t be the only DC icon we’ll see. Isabela Merced has been cast as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion (favorite of Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn) will portray Guy Gardner, also known as Green Lantern, Edi Gathegi from X-Men: First Class is set to play Mister Terrific, and the versatile Anthony Carrigan from HBO’s Barry has been chosen for the role of Metamorpho.

In other significant characters from Superman’s history, Nicholas Hoult is planning to shave his head for the part of Lex Luthor. Meanwhile, Skyler Gisondo, known for his work on Santa Clarita Diet, will step into the role of Jimmy Olsen. The upcoming Superman film will also connect with its bookending DCU projects. Frank Grillo will resume his character Rick Flag Sr., first appearing in Creature Commandos, this time in live-action form. Lastly, Milly Alcock will make her debut as Supergirl in this movie and later lead a standalone film in 2026.
