Thunderbolts* Star Drops Big Clue About That Asterisk (Have Fans Figure It Out?)

As a film critic with a lifetime of comic book fandom under my belt, I must say that the latest revelations about Marvel’s Thunderbolts* have me buzzing with anticipation. The inclusion of an asterisk at the end of the title has been a subject of intrigue among fans for quite some time now, and David Harbour’s recent comments at D23 Expo Brazil have only added fuel to the fire.

David Harbour, known for his role in “Stranger Things”, continues to provide hints about the possible meaning of the asterisk in the title of the upcoming Marvel movie, “Thunderbolts”. At the D23 Expo Brazil, fans got a fresh glimpse of the film with a new trailer for Thunderbolts*. Some viewers might have overlooked the asterisk at the end of the “Thunderbolts*” title. Although Marvel hasn’t revealed the reason behind it yet, this small detail is not accidental. Fortunately, David Harbour has been sharing insights about the enigmatic Thunderbolts asterisk in interviews.

At D23 Expo Brazil, David Harbour, who plays Red Guardian, discussed the film ‘Thunderbolts’ with Omelet. Regarding the asterisk in the title, Harbour explained its significance, suggesting it ties into the overall movie plot. He then shared a story about how people on social media correct spelling mistakes using an asterisk to highlight errors. “Not everything is as it appears,” he hinted.

Are the Thunderbolts really the Dark Avengers?

A popular theory circulating suggests that the conclusion of the Thunderbolts saga might unveil a surprising truth – they aren’t actually called the Thunderbolts, but rather the Secret Avengers. During Marvel’s Dark Reign publishing campaign, a series titled Dark Avengers was released, which stemmed from the events of Secret Invasion. If this theory holds true, it would mean that Norman Osborn, who took over as the public hero figure to counteract the Skrull invasion on Earth and subsequently headed S.H.I.E.L.D., renaming it H.A.M.M.E.R., was manipulating the Thunderbolts all along.

One of Norman’s upcoming strategies involved creating a team modeled after the Avengers, but with a twist: he selected villains to impersonate Earth’s Mightiest Heroes instead of choosing heroes to stand by his side. The roster included Daken taking on Wolverine’s role, Mac Gargan as Venom portraying Spider-Man, Moonstone masquerading as Ms. Marvel, Noh-Varr stepping in as Captain Marvel, Bullseye assuming Hawkeye’s position, Sentry joining the team, and Norman Osborn donning the Iron Patriot suit.

Since there’s no active Avengers team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it presents an opportunity that Valentina Allegra de Fontaine might be eager to seize. The Thunderbolts trailer hints that Valentina now owns Avengers Tower, implying she’s settling comfortably into her new position.

Under the direction of Jake Schreier, the film titled “Thunderbolts” features prominent actors such as Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour (who appears twice), Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer, Wendell Edward Pierce, and an impressive ensemble including David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The movie is set to hit theaters on May 2, 2025.
