Another Star Wars Movie Delayed Indefinitely and Pulled From Release Calendar

As a lifelong Star Wars devotee who has witnessed the rise and fall of various spin-offs, prequels, and sequels, I must admit that this latest news left me both bewildered and amused. On one hand, it’s disheartening to see yet another potential addition to the saga vanish from the release calendar like a lightspeed malfunction. But on the other, I can’t help but find a touch of humor in the fact that Ice Age 6 is now taking the place of what could have been a groundbreaking new Star Wars movie.

Fans of Star Wars have been given mixed news regarding future films. While there’s a new trilogy in development, it’s disappointing to learn that a Star Wars film originally scheduled for release on December 18th, 2026 has been removed from the schedule. Instead, Ice Age 6 is now slated to take its place, as Disney revealed during their D23 Brazil event.

2026 was already promising an exciting chapter for Star Wars enthusiasts due to the upcoming releases of two movies in the same year. It has been confirmed that among these films is “The Mandalorian & Grogu”, scheduled for May 22nd, 2026, which won’t be changing its release date anytime soon.

What’s unclear is the type of the other enigmatic Star Wars movie and whether it ties into the newly revealed trilogy. The report mentions there was uncertainty as to whether it would be part of Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker’s future adventures. If it does tie in with that new trilogy, there might be some excitement or “Whiplash,” given the recent announcement. Hopefully, this is just a reshuffling of the release schedule now that a definitive plan for the major trilogy has been established.

One of Many

If the recently announced character isn’t as originally planned, it might not instill much confidence in the Star Wars franchise. It’s possible that these changes are connected to one of the many other Star Wars projects currently in development, including those led by Simon Kinberg, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Donald Glover, James Mangold, and Taika Waititi.

According to the latest updates, Simon Kinberg has secured a contract with Disney and Lucasfilm to create a brand-new trilogy of Star Wars films. These movies are expected to be Episodes 10 through 12. Although there’s some debate about whether this new trilogy will link up with the Skywalker Saga, The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit mentioned that Kinberg will be writing and producing a “fresh Star Wars trilogy” for Lucasfilm. I’ve been informed that it won’t be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga but rather a new story featuring different characters and potentially charting a new course for the Star Wars universe.

No Skywalker…with a Catch

Although this upcoming trilogy might introduce a fresh narrative, it doesn’t necessarily break away from the Skywalker storyline entirely. There are indications that the series plans to further develop Rey’s character and weave her story into the creation of a new Jedi order. Despite being associated with the Skywalker saga, Rey’s character has moved on from her past, lineage, and name in her journey ahead, meaning that while she was part of it, this trilogy can still tell a standalone and distinct story separate from the Skywalker saga.

Let’s observe and see how events unfold since other initiatives are underway, too. There’s a chance these might gather pace, altering our current trajectory. Things remain fluid, subject to potential shifts.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the recent developments in the Star Wars universe, and what you’re hoping for from the upcoming trilogy! Feel free to share your Star Wars insights with me on Threads, Twitter (@mattaguilarcb), or Bluesky (@knightofoa)!
